SIGNS

AMARILLO -- The fun started early this morning.

As I went to turn the shower on, there was no water pressure. I called the front desk, and Maintenance was promptly dispatched. Since I was already ready for the shower, I was just in a towel as the maintenance man determined that it was just the hot water -- the shower's water was controlled by one of those continuous dials -- and fixed the water right up.

The drive from Midland to Lubbock went nicely, with the cruise set on 70 for almost the entire route. Nature fittingly called at this point, so I found a convenience store and pulled in. I almost (accidentally) jumped in front of another gentleman, apologized, and waited my turn.

I stopped at the nearby South Plains Mall for some headwear to replace the hat sitting on my bed at home. At Dillard's, I found a nice Polo-brand hat (ON SALE!), white with narrow blue and yellow bands. But on the way back through the mall, a mall-hallway vendor (I'll call her Sasha; she had a vaguely Russian accent) snagged me for a Christmas-gift suggestion. I must say that the buffing and polish she did on my thumbnail was not bad, I guess. If there are any prospective Mrs Beams out there -- Sasha, call me maybe? -- this would be a good idea for a gift.

I then moved on to fill up the gas tank -- you would've thought I'd done that earlier in the narrative -- but then noticed a dozen blocks down the road that I hadn't rescrewed the gas cap and closed the tank door. Eh.

I found the Buddy Holly statue at the corner of 19th & Crickets -- Buddy Holly Ave was the next block up from Crickets -- and then it was on to a pre-game alumni luncheon for the free food.

As for the game: it was fitting that it took place in Buddy Holly's hometown, because we crashed and burned. The game was such a joke, there was a streaker late in the fourth quarter.

Evacuating to Amarillo on I-27, I had to smile when I noticed Exit 90 led to the town of Happy. And being the Texas panhandle, when the sun goes down, it disappears in a brilliant blaze of glory.

For dinner, I was looking for something different, and found it at Thai Town. I can never remember what I order at Thai restaurants -- the names are too short for them to stick -- but it was good.
