FRIDAY-NIGHT LIGHTS

MIDLAND TX -- Friday morning kicked off with a brief tour of the NM State campus, and then it was a brief 45-minute drive into El Paso. I found it surprising that, despite UTEP naming their stadium "The Sun Bowl", it was cloudy verging on slight drizzle during my visit.

Despite an 80mph speed limit for most of the way, it was still a 4½-hour haul to Midland, broken up by a bathroom break in the small town of Pecos and a border-patrol check in Hudspeth County. (Unlike Fiona Apple and Nelly, I passed through with flying colors.)

I stopped off at the local stadium box office to pick up my ticket for the HS football game later in the evening. In recording my name, the receptionist said, "Oh, like a beam of laait?" I suggested like the bourbon.

For dinner, I visited the Genghis Grill -- a Mongolian stir-fry -- and then headed off for a showdown between the home-standing Lee Rebels and the #8 team in the state, Abilene, to take control of the District 2-5A standings.

It was nip and tuck in the first half, with Lee leading 17-14. However, Abilene pulled away, winning the game 31-17.
