Okay, NOW it feels like late May.

We've had incredibly strange weather here lately... Usually, by the end of April we get temperatures in the mid- 80s to low-90s.  Normally that SUCKS COMPLETE ASS, and continues to suck said complete ass until damn near Halloween... but this year I thought I'd get a jump on summer, and set up the above-ground swimming pool early.  I fondly remember last summer, during which I spent a lot of my mornings floating around on an inflatable raft, reading books and sipping ice-cold beer.  It was very relaxing, and I got so tanned for the first time in my life, despite my southern Italian and Spanish heritage.  Lots of people pay top dollar to get as nice a tan as I had!  (I know, I know... it's bad for me, but if you got ridiculed every time you wore shorts all your life like I did, you'd be excited to have a little color too!)

So, about a month ago, I woke up one sunny Saturday morning, and decided to set up the pool.  I wanted to have the maximum amount of pool time as possible... we'll be moving soon, possibly to a little apartment that has no yard.  That was actually the first thing I thought about when my mom told we that she's gonna let the house go into foreclosure.  "Nooo! Our backyard is large, private, and perfect for the pool!  We can't move now, not with summer so close!"  So I set it up the first warm sunny day we had.

Unfortunately, that was the ONLY warm sunny day we've had.  Every day since then,  I looked out our kitchen window, watching the high winds toss the branches on the trees, blowing leaves and spent jasmine blossoms around and into the pool water (the cover had blown off).  Sadly, I watched the raindrops pummel the once-pristine and crystal-clear surface of the water, and turned away from the winterlike scene out the window to put the kettle on to boil for another steaming mug of tea.

Today, however... JEEZ!  I'm at work, where we have NO air-conditioning.  The thermostat now reads 84 degrees... in actuality, it's much warmer back here behind my bar, because of all the refrigerators and the espresso machine kicking heat out.  Not to mention the hot air that comes blasting in at me when a car is in my drive-thru window.  Most of the time, the car's fan is blowing hot air from the engine compartment straight at my face, so I'm trying to be all nice and polite and friendly when taking their order, when all the while my eyeballs are drying up and my neck is dripping sweat.  I'd dearly love to say, "Would you hurry the fuck up and order something to drink before I have a heat stroke in here!"

But I can't.  I just have to grin and bear it.  And curse them out after they've driven off.

I think I'll stop at the store on the way home to buy a jug of bleach to dump into the pool tonight.  I am definitely going for a swim tomorrow morning!
