16 -- Evergreen -- Thousand

He's told himself a thousand times that Basch won't want him, and a thousand more times the part of him that prompted him to become a pirate has said go for it anyway: it's always worth a try. It's not like they have much of a friendship to lose, after all, and he can't be any better for wandering around dealing with a stupid level of infatuation for him. And there's always the chance that things will actually work, small as he thinks it is.

Some people turn soft when they fall in love. Balthier's found it mostly makes him irritable.

17 -- Keeping in touch -- Jealousy

Basch suspects Fran of forcing Balthier to write every now and then, but he doesn't mind, really, either way. Sometimes he envies the two of them a little: they get to be free, to have only the responsibilities they want, to live under no one's rule but their own. And sometimes it makes him angry, that they can so evade all the little things that plague him daily, things he knows Balthier would hate.

In the end, he's just mostly glad to hear from them, to know that they haven't gotten themselves caught or blown up or lost in some pathless tomb. Someday, he hopes, he can take up their offer of going with them for a while with a clear conscience.

18 -- Absence of fear -- Trust

After all that time in a cage, he should hate bonds -- fear them, even, fear the very idea. Instead Basch finds that he trusts Balthier enough to relax, to let him do what he wants, even if he is tied up so that he can't move. He's surprised by his own lack of fear for only a moment -- and then Balthier drives all such thoughts from his head, touching and kissing and stroking and licking, making him cry out in surprise and in pleasure. There's no time to think of being afraid, no time to think of cages, no room for anything in his mind but Balthier being such a perfect tease -- no room in his mind for anything but Balthier in general. And he thinks that's probably exactly what Balthier wants.

19 -- On the radio -- Nine Lives

Basch wasn't really surprised to hear that Balthier's on the Bahamut. It's just like him to go for the heroics, and it even makes Basch smile in the midst of everything. Ashe still looks distraught, and Basch doesn't know what to say to her if she doesn't know Balthier will be fine in the way he does. He's already observed that Balthier is like a cat: he always lands on his feet, and even if he doesn't, he'll have another eight lives to spare -- metaphorically speaking, at least.

The others might worry, but he won't: he knows Balthier is going to be alright.

20 -- Stretching the truth -- Knows

"I am not in love with him," Basch says to Fran, aware that those horribly-perceptive eyes won't miss a trick. He's not even sure why he's bothering to lie: they both know that isn't quite the truth, and they both know that they both know that. It's just like a pirate like Balthier to have a partner like Fran, Basch thinks, exasperated and amused and admiring all at once.

"You wish that were the case," she says, surprisingly direct, "but you can't deny it."

Basch nods: he knows she's right -- but that doesn't mean he's going to tell Balthier.
