"Contraception: conservatives say that abstinence is best. But studies show that pledges of abstinence have very little positive impact, and some negative: pledges are less likely to use contraceptives when they do have sex. I have a question for the abstinence-only birth control folk: how does abstinence work on weight control? On alcoholism? Drugs? Illicit riches? Maybe we should have more of it. Meanwhile if a fat person wants to lecture me on abstinence, I'll be cynical." ~ From Piers Anthony's page/blog at HiPiers.com.

No one else was talking, so I randomly decided to post something and attempt to stir an argument up.

He also mentions in his second autobiography, How Precious Was That While, that trying to suppress sexual ideas, movies, themes, often hurts children, and makes them more susceptible to getting raped. I don't have the time to look up the actual quote here, but I'll get it later, after I get home.

Basically, the idea I'm hinting at is not a new or original one. Does attempting to suppress things, at least in some ways, lead to them blossoming ever faster, like trying to dam a river with shoddy logs and some twine? (This also reminds me of my SC strategy, for those who know me. I react better when canned and put under pressure.)

There's evidence of this effect elsewhere, in a number of other situations. Granted, it can be controlled, and it can have a positive impact. But that takes hard work and concentration, and we cannot just slap that into some one, nor should we wish to.

This evidence has lead me to rethink my gun-control opinion several times, since, while trying to control guns may make it at least slightly harder to get them, it may also make them more in style, more popular.

At any rate, I've spoken my peace. CTG or Sab can gun the post down, if they think I jumped the gun and attempted to rabble-rouse without them, but I was bored. I'd post this in Private mode, but I don't know the exact effects that has in a community. Just members see it, correct? If so, I'll edit it when I get home.
