Leggo my ego!

Here's a question that goes well with the community's doctrine: Do you believe that people capable of advanced thought and reasoning flaunt their skills above the average joes?

On one hand, it's not a wise or respectable thing to do, as any person who actually is intelligence indubitably knows. Instead of putting ourselves up on a high pedestal, we should be more focused on the world around us and the lesser folk and helping them with our abilities, rather than taunting "Haha, simpleton!" It can be argued that a real intellectual would not allow any sort of ego whatsoever, but that's a hard thing to do.

On the other hand, seeing the world from our raised chariot could benefit the world we help more by allowing us to see it better without getting mixed up in the trivial problems of society because, let's face it, it is our duty to help those less fortunate than us. It'd just be a waste not to do so. What is the point of being special when we don't use our skills for good? I know it sounds like a Marvel comic, but it's true. In separating ourselves, we can accomplish more in our isolated environment, away from the dinguses.

Or there's the third option: complete isolation. Basically, leaving the world the way it is and leaving to create our own "utopia" as the rest of civilization rots. This would be the opposite of "doing good", unless you want to go to the total extreme and become some sort of mad scientist, bent on causing destruction and suffer to everyone who doesn't understand. Actually, I like that idea, but that's for another time. XD

I'm sure we know what it's like to be in a society that no longer seems to hold intellectuals in high esteem, but instead worships the pretty, the popular and the tricky. Making a name for ourselves seems harder than ever and it's hard not to turn to isolation when everyone else already has their back to us. I suppose to gifted were never meant to fit in, but I think that society, in general, is spiraling itself down into a pit of hell, when compared to the past.

EDIT: I know I'm not a great speaker (or "typist") and I'm not great with words, but I like to think I get my point across.
