This is to just kill time before my real post.
I took yesterday off, but to reward you I'm posting a deleted scene from earlier on. At the end of Part 1, Ailene bathes and is administered to by Thane. After that scene, Thane leaves and then Ailene slips off to sleep.
That wasn't the original plan.
Originally, Ailene returns to the main room for a few paragraphs, and the crew briefly discusses Ailene's information on the Voice. This was meant to be an infodump about Ailene's relationship with Voice, as well as just general worldbuilding.
I stopped about half way and deleted it (pasting it into another document in case I changed my mind) because I felt they'd sat around talking enough, and I should just reveal that stuff as it went along.
There are a few things I'd like to add in later, like Ailene and Voice being close. It also mentions Ben smoking, and the fact that specific sins are tied to specific cursing gods (and Raine talks. Woo). But other then that, I figured it was a waste of space.
So here it is for those curious; I think it's about 500 words and people make fun of Thane, so it might be worth checking out. Expect a real post later tonight.
Ailene nodded, getting up from the bed and following Thane to the door. “Yes, certainly. He did mention that before we had dinner.”
Thane smiled, beckoning Ailene to exit through the open door. He closed it gently behind her before following close behind as the pair made their way to the meeting room.
The crew was gathered, as they so often were, around the large table. Ailene immediately noticed Benjamin was missing, the room surprisingly quieter in his absence.
“I hear two sets of footsteps, so I take it Ailene hasn’t fallen asleep on us?” Dratan joked, doing his best to face in the newcomer’s direction as they entered the room. The rest of the crew turned and nodded, save Wraith, who didn’t move from his seat on the far side.
Thane pulled a chair out for Ailene, who thanked the Ravenian before taking a seat. Thane then sat in his usual spot, and Ailene was not surprised to see the first thing he did was pull out a large, dusty book. He’ll never change, she smiled inwardly.
“I presume your wash was satisfactory?” Dratan questioned, his long dark hair falling across his face. “You were in there for a considerable amount of time, Ailene.”
“It wasn’t all me just sitting in a wash basin,” Ailene protested. “Thane helped administer to the wounds Ralf’s men gave me last night.”
“Ah,” Dratan grinned. “So you’ve also fallen victim to one of Thane’s so-called ‘remedies?’ At least it isn’t as painful as his cooking, right?”
Thane didn’t even mutter a response; he was either far too engrossed in his book or didn’t feel the jokes merited a retort. Dratan continued.
“You’ll have to forgive Benjamin; he has an addiction to those horrible cigarettes. I assume he’ll be back shortly.”
Raine shook her head; Ailene noticed the High Priestess looked exceptionally tired. “I do not wish to bear the Pestilence sin of impatience, but can we please make this quick? With all the new ideas for my preaching you told me, Dratan, I’m going to need time to plan sermons for me and the rest of the clergy, and it’s late already.”
Dratan nodded in her direction. “Sorry, Raine, I’ve given you quite a task. I will be brief. What I wished to discuss is what we know about Dire’s Voice.”
There was a silence before Ailene piped up, “I assume you are asking me this? Considering I’m the only one who has ever had any interaction with him?”
“Yes, you are correct,” Dratan responded, running his hands slowly across the grain of the table. “I want you to tell me what you know about him. If we plan on meeting with him sometime in the next month or so, we’ll need to be prepared.”
Ailene took a deep breath, and let it out slowly. “It is hard to determine where exactly I should begin, but I suppose I can start with what I know. The Voice isn’t very old; I dare say he is probably only as old as Thane.”
“Bless you, child, for thinking me young,” Thane’s eyes didn’t leave his book, but Ailene caught a large smile across his face.
She continued, “He was younger then my parents, at any rate, because they frequently mentioned the Voice previous. Voice was always a kind man, very adament about serving the gods in every facet of his life.
