The movie we watched in Geology scared the shit out of me.
Does anyone remember the Chicago heat waves in 1995 that killed like 800 people? Over the last few years, summers have been hot, granted, but for some reason I always thought to myself "Yeah, it's hot, but i remember as a kid, summers were REALLY HOT. was I just a baby then?" No. I was merely remembering that heat wave that killed 800 people in Chicago. Except when you're a kid, you don't know it's a heat wave, it's just, Summer.
*Heat Waves lasting 4 days or more, like that one, have tripled in the last 50 years.
And for you Coloradoans... 75% of water in western states, like Colorado, is stored in snowpack until we need it. Because of the droughts (HELLO Last few years and lots of forest fires!) and warm weather, *these snowpacks have declined over 60% in the last 50 years. The water is melting and rushing down before we can store it. The west will soon have to find another viable water supply. SCARY.
*We face losing 1/4 of the animals on earth now to Extinction within THIS century, while we see a rise in tropical disease carrying insects globally.
*99% of the glaciers in Alaska are melting, retreating, or shrinking. This hasn't happened in 5,000 years.
*The number of category 4 and 5 hurricanes has more than doubled since 1970 due to the energy in the warmer water.
*57 million trees are used to make catalogs every year in the United States alone. fuckin catalogs.
*A 100 mile square solar panel area (which would fit conveniently with room to spare in the uninhabitable mojave desert) could replace all the coal now burned to generate electricity in the entire United States. Over 50% of the nation's energy comes from coal. But you know, the government isn't interested in kicking the coal addiction.
Global warming is scary.
