I'm having a hard time with the idea that my dad, even though he hates social and religious extremism, is happy to support and vote for Romney simply because he wants to continue to vote for Republican economic plans. I get it, he's an market analyst, and is going to vote on this issue because it is most important to him. What I can't get over is that he'll cast a vote for someone who, other than economics, represents everything he disagrees with in America. I posted about this on facebook today,
I've heard a lot of people saying they don't agree with the extremist Republican platform this election, but they'll still vote Republican for its more conservative fiscal plan in this troubled economy.
The economy may be troubled, but there is more at stake here than money, and there is absolutely no way, no matter how bad things get, that I would compromise my integrity to cast a vote for someone who stands for, embodies, and supports bigoted, sexist, anti-intellectual platforms that attack science, education, women, and confirmed American rights. My values are NOT for sale.
with the qualification
Just to clarify, I have plenty of respect for Republican economic and political positions advocating for small government, and I have sympathy for those Republicans who feel the party's social/religious extremism no longer represents them. But I condemn those who cast a vote for something that publicly contradicts their inherent personal values.
I know facebook rants aren't the best avenue for dialogue, I'm just garnering frustration from my conservative friends that I don't want to alienate, and everyone's sick of facebook politics, but I couldn't help it. It bothers me so much that my father will vote for someone he doesn't believe in. It offends me as a woman, teacher, etc. It gives the impression that America is more crazy than it is when moderate republicans won't exercise their voice. It makes me so sad to see the infusion of religious, anti-intellectual extremism in this country, and it shocks and appalls me that such extremists are getting so much attention and support, especially from people who actually DON'T support their ideas.
