Today was my last day of being in the classroom as a TA. I am happy to have had such a great semester with this group. I learned a lot about teaching this year, and I can't wait to have my own class one day. I will be sad to be out of the classroom next semester, but it really is all for the best with the work I need to get done next year. My last morning classes were calm but productive, and my last afternoon classes were each a blast. After class yesterday Patrick came up to me and said that this semester was great and that today he'd be declaring a history major! He wants to teach high school history. I couldn't have been more thrilled that he enjoyed the class and decided to major in the subject! He'll do great. That left me in the happiest mood all afternoon yesterday. Phil's student declared a minor, and mine announced a major, all in one day! We high-fived for sure.
Today's afternoon class followed another downpour - I ran to class with a spongebob squarepants towel over my head (it was all I had in the car!) which started the class off on a humorous beat. Everyone was in a good mood, tolerated my sacchrine end-of-class comments about the benefits of studying history, and contributed to our productive class overview. In it we traced the major events/units of the 1800s and 1900s, how the proceeded from one another, and were interconnected by recurring themes that define the character of the modern world and set it aside from the early modern pre-midterm world. It was a nice capstone to the class, and I hope it provides a good platform for their studying.
I bought myself a little present for finishing up another fine year of teaching. I know I still have grading to do, but I couldn't resist. :-)
