Today it is 90 and sunny in St. Louis. HOT! When Casey and I were on our walk, we saw a car parked outside the boxing gym, and there was a TINY puppy inside. OMG it was so cute. My first thought was, omg someone left this tiny puppy locked in a car in the sun on a day like this?! The window was cracked a centimeter, but I knew that in this heat, that wouldn't matter. It would be at least 100 in that car, probably more. We both agreed that was horrible, but maybe the person was only dashing in to pick up a check and would be back any second. We agreed to do a quick spin down the street and back (which takes us approx 5 to 8 minutes) and if it was still there, we'd go into the gym and ask whose car it was. Sure enough when we got back, it was still there. We couldn't see the puppy anymore, so we thought, maybe it was only in there for a second, and they're out on a walk or something. So we peered in the windows and the tiny puppy peeked it's head up at us from below the seat in the back. At that point a very sweaty guy wearing boxing gloves and an older trainer came out and asked if there was a problem. I figured that since they didn't start out by aggressively asking me to get away from their car, that they'd be reasonable. I told them that they couldn't leave that puppy in the car, and to do so would be a prosecutable offense of animal abuse. He looked super confused and said, "well he's got food in there, and I won't be long." He had NO idea. And judging from his sweat, he'd already been there awhile working out. I told him that it was easily over 100 degrees in that car and that the puppy could overheat very easily and could die. The trainer looked surprised and said "you've got a dog in there?" and told him he could bring the puppy inside for the remainder of the workout. I assume that since that puppy was so young, that he just got the dog, and is one of those first-time pet owners who just has absolutely no idea what he's doing. Hopefully today was a wake-up call and he won't do that again. Casey and I agreed that every time we walk Charlie this summer we'll be walking past the gym and keeping an eye out for that green honda. If that puppy's there again, I won't even bother asking after the owner in the gym, I'll be calling the police there and then.
