This morning, it was a clear, cool day. Friday! I decided it was the perfect day to wear my new cropped cream blazer that Mom brought me as an Easter present. It was warm enough out that I didn't need a real coat.
Cream Blazer: Kohl's, from Mom <3
Purple top: Loft, from Grammie
Earrings: Souvenir from Spain
Necklace: Grad Gift from Grandma
Teaching went well today. We've been talking about WWI and the trenches. We watched "The Charge" scene from All Quiet on the Western Front (the tech worked without complication in all my classrooms, yay!) and had a good discussion based on the documents about what is a "fair fight" in war, whether or not that idea is an oxymoron, where the lines are drawn and why, and how each generation defines acceptable combat differently. WWI provides an interesting springboard for that discussion because it's so radically different from 19th century warfare and so very different from WWII as well, so I imagine we'll continue that discussion in the coming weeks. The students had some really interesting points and opinions about it, which was exciting. You know they're engaged with the material when they make comments about what they might do or how they would react to these situations. I always like to see them trying to put themselves "in their shoes" when it comes to people in history. Such speculation may not be historically useful, but I think it always does a lot personally for students to identify with people different from them.
On my way to my second class of the day, I got caught in a MONSOON of Saint Louis spring rain. I arrived to class with soaked clothes, frizzy hair, shoes filled with water, damp reading packets for class, and an umbrella broken or bent in three places.
That's okay though, I embraced it and bonded with the students over how soaked we all were, and mentioned how the discomfort was particularly appropriate on the day we were discussing the trenches.
In the afternoon I went with Dan, Joe W, and Ian to get hot sandwiches from Pickleman's deli. We got even more soaked in that adventure. It was not a good day to venture out without a jacket. Hah!
After spending the day in squishy, chilled shoes and damp clothes, it felt good to come home and trade it all for sweatpants and slippers.
(In other news, I just got the instagram app on my phone. I used to make fun of instagram a lot, but... now that I have it, it seems like it will be fun. I don't really get how it works yet though, which is a little annoying.)
I have a lot of homework to do, but since it's Friday, I've decided to make a cup of HOT tea and curl up with Catching Fire for a few hours and unwind for a little while...
Have a good weekend everyone!
Edit: I ended up reading in bed for a few hours with Casey when he got home from work, then eventually passed out for like 2 hours for a nap, got up to watch Midnight in Paris (which I loved more than I can describe here), and then we each went back to bed and finished our respective Hunger Games books around 1am. I was exhausted on Friday, and this soothing, relaxing evening at home was the perfect way to relax.
Can't wait til I have time to start the third book!
