Trends That Drive Me Nuts

facial scrubs. if you go to a pharmacy to buy face wash, pretty much all of the options that aren't for acne/oily skin include a scrub agent. my old fallback, L'Oreal Cleanser, has been discontinued, in favor of several scrubby varieties. it's claimed the gritty material is great for exfoliation, but that's actually not the case. washing with a ( Read more... )

AIM toothpaste, $1.39, down on the bottom shelf. My family used it for years. I recommend it.

Also, in face wash, I recommend Cetaphil (plain, ordinary, soft cleanser) or this one (which I alternate with this very mildly scrubby one, because it works beautifully on me).

yeah, i like Cetaphil. stupid Duane Reade didn't seem to have any in stock, though. maybe i should have been ranting about DR, huh? :)

thanks a ton for the recommendations!

Have you tried Nutrogena? Or Cetaphil? Those are two that are pretty good and I don't think they have scrubby things.

I use Origins Dr. Weil's Plantidote Mega-Mushroom (ask Jeff how much it bugs him that they call it that..."mushrooms aren't a plant!" he said) line...cleanser (no scrubby bits), face serum, and moisturizer. It *is* pretty pricey, though...that's the only drawback. But I love how my skin feels when I use it.

ha! etoilepb recommended the same. (Neutrogena or Cetaphil)

we have an Origins in our building! i'll check it out. interesting, the directions tell you to rub the cleanser into your skin while it's dry.

$26 isn't prohibitive...

they'll give you a little mini facial at origins and let you try out the products in the store. i went in just looking for a cleanser, and came out with the whole freaking dr. weil line. plus the "modern friction" which IS scrubby stuff, but you don't use that every day.

i'm sort of intimidated by that store, at least the branch here. :) i used to buy blemish concealer there, but they discontinued the one i liked.

the Dove Pro-Age bar has olive oil in it, which is great for places like boston with really soft water (which dries the hell out of your skin, even with mild cleansers). I think nyc has excessively hard water though.

I have the opposite problem. They always have the non-scrubby version of my face washes in stock and not the scrubby ones. And my face needs the scrubs, or so my many zits pop out to tell me. I am unhappy that most scrubs, with their scant round plastic beads, are not very scrubby, which defeats the purpose.

Not that you asked for recommendations, but if you're after non-round-bead scrubby washes (which I hate because the beads somehow end up stuck in my eyebrows):

I ended up with a free Garnier face wash that feels like you're going through a car wash. I only use it about twice a month because it's so very scrubby. According to their website, it seems to be the "Nutri-Pure Microbead Cream Scrub."

Also if you want to spend a lot of money, Clarins has a pretty amazing orange extract exfoliating cleanser. (My roommate in Washington Heights worked for Clarins so our place was always full of their stuff.)

Thanks. I'll look into them. I actually like the scrubbiness of my proactive face wash. Unfortunately, it seems to do nothing for my acne anymore.

After L'Oreal stopped making the cleanser I used, I decided to just go with Oil of Olay. I use the one for sensitive skin--which says it has NO SOAP--and it's fantastic. I use it with the lotion, which is horribly overpriced, but even in the humidity, I've only had one lone, stray pimple. (but it was near where I always cover my mouth with my hand when I'm not paying attention, so I figure it's not the cleanser!)

I miss my L'Oreal facewash, though. It was the only cleanser my face ever really LOVED. . .

Yes! Yes it was! Once I hit 20/21, that was the ONLY cleanser that really worked on my skin, which isn't that oily. I loved that stuff, OMG. They stopped making it, and I'd get it at L'Oreal when I worked there, but . . . well, we all know how that ended! LOL

The Olay that I use is in a white and blue container. And it'll say "sensitive skin" and "non-soap." It's amazing.
