Another day, another broken bicycle part

Sep 28, 2005 16:04

This is just not my week for cycling.

Last Wednesday I broke my handlebarsFriday, Saturday and Monday I rode my Crosscheck like normal. As I was coming up the last little hill home Tuesday, I stood up to climb it and something was wrong with my bike. I stopped immediately, thinking at first I'd popped multiple spokes, or broken my axle. If ( Read more... )

is that dirt on the sheared faces on the lower part, attached to the chain stays? like maybe it'd been cracking for a while?

Yup, that's dirt. I think this started as a small crack from a collision I had about a year ago. It's probably been getting wider for a little while now.

I'm going to try and get it brazed back on. If that's not possible for some reason, it's time to start looking at new frames. Now, should I go with another Cross-check (thus making it easy to swap parts), or should I look into the Soma Doublecross? The Soma is a little nicer looking, but might be a little too light weight for me...

Yes, I've just been busy with work and real life, so I haven't had a chance to respond. Speaking of which, I need to go pack my lunch and get on the bike to work.

I don't know you, but I am impressed at the bike carnage. If you can't find anybody to weld/braze that thing up for you, I've got access to a TIG machine, and I'm not afraid to use it.

It won't be pretty, but it could get you rollin' again.

I don't think I'll have a problem. Worst comes to worst, a cycling acquaintance is an aerospace machinist and member of Dead Baby Bike Gang, so he could probably do it, or have someone do it.

Thanks for the offer though.

/me backs slowly away from the crazy with the TIG machine.
