Learning a language ... which one?

Aug 03, 2008 13:46

I've recently finished my uni course and will graduate in October, and now want to pick up a language (yep, want to continue with the studying lol). Any suggestions on which language I should start off with?

I am looking for one that is not too hard to learn, and one using the latin alphabet (no Chinese, Japanese, Russian or Arabic please). ( Read more... )

Never really considered Portuguese, but if I do learn Spanish, I might learn these two together, thanks for the tip

if its between german and french, id take french. french and spanish have similar features so if youve got french down it easier to pick spanish up as well.

thats just my personal preference since i think its a prettier language.

Unfortunately I don't know any online courses, but if you decide to learn French, I'm here to help my friend. If you have any questions, or you need help with anything, I'll gladly help. :)

It's not that easy to learn (there's a lot of different grammar rules), but I guess it's the case with any language anyway. One thing that could be a little difficult is that in French, we consider the gender. So for the word ''the'', you have either ''le'' (masculine) or ''la''(feminine). Let's say you want to say ''the oven'', in french it will be ''le four'', and if you want to say ''the chair'', it's gonna be ''la chaise'', so that might be confusing at first. But I say go for it, it's a beautiful language and there're a lot of words that are almost the same as in English, so it's a good start. :)

I was thinking about learning spanish (I wanted to learn a third language), and I might try soon. It's always good to learn something that might be useful, especially since I love to travel.

Yey, my own tutor! Thanks for that :)

I had a quick look at the grammar rules and they look complicated, but I am willing to learn.

Downloaded some podcasts and guides to start off with and will head to the library for some beginner's books. I can't wait to start, French is a language I always wanted to learn, sounds so sexy!

I was considering Spanish, but went for German or French instead cos I want to start travelling next year and might be more of use.

Not only your own tutor, but also, free tutor : score !! ;)

It can be complicated (I still have problems sometimes, lol), but unless you want to write a novel or something, I think it'll be okay. :)

You really sound motivated, which is perfect to learn a new language. Once you'll be a little more advanced in your learning process, you could watch some movies and tv shows in French too, it's always a great way to learn a language (I still thank my TV for helping me learn English ;) ).

You want to travel ? That's great ! Where do you want to go exactly ?

Thanks for the offer of help, I think I will be needing it, haven't yet started, still getting podcasts, audiobooks and ebooks online together.

Any idea where I can get French movies and shows? Maybe download it like I do French shows. But will definitely be doing that once I get more into it.

Is the French in Canada much different from the French in France? For example, some languages may be different between some countries? I am curious to know.

Planning to travel early next year, work in London and travel around Europe as well. But saving up is the hard part :( Uggghhh!

I personally love German, but if you want to go for a widely spoken language I'd either go with Spanish or French =)

I am going with French for now, and might pick up German later on. Spanish I considered as well and would be my 3rd language. Thanks for the comment.
