I am fan wanking this as it is more what Dean is saying about himself. I am thinking that what we are going to see this season is BOTH boys cracking up from their hell experiences because other than Dean crawling into a bottle we didn't get that yet. Saying this because of Dean's speech tonight and his insistence to Bobby that he isn't "like Sam" and won't lose his marbles.
Then again, I'm probably setting myself ip for disappointment - the writers don't usually think that deeply about characterization lol.
I'd be willing to go along with the fanwank except that the parallels were drawn between Sam and Amy with a six-inch-wide Sharpie. :( I agree with you that we haven't really seen the fallout from Dean's Hell trip, but it makes me sad that he had to straight-out lie to Sam to carry this out.
It makes me sad, too. Sigh. The thing is, we've beaten this horse, over and over. And I'm getting impatient because the lack of character growth we see for Dean is making it hard for me to see him as a sympathetic character. Which really sucks. :(
It occurred to me after watching con videos that this was the first ep they shot of the season, so they hadn't had the brotherly-bonding-in-the-warehouse scene, which might have been why this ep felt like last season. I hope it was a one-time thing. :(

BUT, Dean sawing off his own cast? Nicely badass.
