Spent yesterday afternoon in the clerk's office at the Dudley District Court witnessing an inquiry for continuance hearing (or something like that). Basically, a complaint (false, by the way) was filed, so both parties had to go before the clerk to see if there was sufficient evidence to send it along to the courts. I am often appalled by what I see at court. I remember Alan trying to file against his ex and the clerk was like
"Why bother, you'll lose"
But expedience often wins over justice

Was this a form of jury duty? Yeah, the courts are really more subjective than people are led to believe.

No, it was totally voluntary as the defendant was my sister. Basically, my niece's boyfriend's mother is psycho and threw him out of the house. My sister and her family took him in and he's been living with them ever since. His mother is furious because he won't move back home (she pulls this crap all the time) because he has finally started to grow a backbone. So one evening she went to my sister's house and ended up punching my sister in the mouth. My sister pressed charges and there's a court case pending. In retaliation, the boyfriend's mother filed her own (false) charges against my sister, thus the drama yesterday.

I know the courts try to keep everything black and white, but ...

Wow, what a mess. I hope your sister and the boyfriend come out of this OK. Good on her for taking him in. And the crazy mother needs a judicial slap down.
