Success! Today, I finally made it to The Princess and the Frog. I went way early to avoid a sellout, and the theatre ended up half empty anyway. Oh well! Totally worth it to feel eight years old again.
I friggin' love classic Disney, and this movie was right in that tradition - great setting, great characters, great story. It had a lovely, distinct style with some clever early scene setting. I especially loved the stylized "Almost There." These movies remind you of the art of making film.
They did a really nice job of evolving the "Disney princess" movie without diminishing the history; in fact, there were a lot of references/hommages to predecessors, particularly The Little Mermaid for possibly obvious reasons (transformations, swamp/lagoon scene, and the villain had a lot of Ursula in him). I loved Charlotte for being hysterical but more than just a spoiled brat. And Stellaaaaaaaaaaa was awesome, ahaha.
Stupid firefly made me cry. One thing that wasn't like being eight years old: the consequences of being kind of PMSy. But I am okay with appreciating these movies in slight different ways.
The songs were forgettable, and the supporting cast, while amusing, doesn't stand up to some previous ensembles. Also, I wanted to understand the villain's motive a bit earlier. I wouldn't put it above Beauty and the Beast or Mulan, but it was a lovely movie and I'm really looking forward to the continued tradition.
