I used to work at a gas station in my teens. This is actually very, very common (although less so now in this day and age of cash pre-pay and swiping your card at the pump).
Usually you can catch them before they drive away completely.
They're very easy to hook back up; they just snap into place. They're designed to come off easily because if they didn't, they'd take the whole pump with them, which is (obviously) much worse...
