I had cross-posted my post below to a couple of on-line communities outside of LiveJournal to try to get some awareness of this going. The murder of one teenage girl doesn't seem to make the news anymore, sadly. I thought that by getting this out there, then maybe, just maybe, that awareness could make a difference in someone's life ( Read more... )

I don't get the whole "cultural sensitivity" thing either. Cultures change. It used to be the cultural norm for people to hang black men from trees. I don't see anyone (sane)mourning the loss of that great tradition. Atrocities are atrocities, no matter how you paint them.

On the other hand, I think mostly people don't stand up and fight because...how? Ideas?

I've heard some stories about men and women who've left these cultures and are trying to make waves about it here in the states. You might want to look into that. Specifically, there was a woman who was allowed to be gang raped by her entire village for some transgression that her brother committed. She still lives in her village, but she's speaking out like crazy. I don't remember much of anything else about the story, but it was big news for a while. Maybe someone else can enlighten us?

Intolerant? Damn right. I refuse to tolerate or justify barbarism whether clothed in the garb of religion or custom. Anyone who does claim to tolerate it is nothing more than an accessory after the fact.
