Melody sat on the front steps on the Institute, staring up at the sky. For one of the few times in the girls life, she was being mopey. Melody brought her knees up to her chin, draping her hands over them. A battered brown suitcase sat next to her leaning up against the steps. A bird flew around a tree only a few feet away from her. At the moment, Melody would trade everything she had to be that bird.
"Can I sit here?" a voice said, near Melody. The blonde turned her head, then smiled. It was Andrea, a mutant about the same age as herself. Melody nodded as Andrea sat down. The two had been alright friends, studying together and occasionally training together. "Is it true?" Andrea asked, looking at Melody.
"Yeah," Melody said, head burying further into her legs. "Ah'm goin home." Andrea's eyes widened and looked at Melody, as if urging her to continue. Melody was slightly hesitant. She didn't really want to do this. She knew that she had been messed up ever since M-Day. She knew that out of the five mutants in her family, it was just her and Jeb who lost their powers. Not Sam, who had his for longer, not Jay who didn't really like his powers that much, but her who adored flying and had just gotten her powers. It seemed like yesterday when she started to fly.
"Ouch," Andrea said, obviously wanting Melody to tell more. The Guthrie shifted her position slightly then relented.
"Ah just don't see why it had to be me," Melody continued, idly playing with her shoelace. "Ah mean, there are billions of mutants in the world an' now there are like...fifty. Mah brothers and mah sister got to keep their powers, why not me? An' I don't wanna leave. Ah like it here!" Melody said, looking up at Andrea. After a brief silence, the other ex-mutant started to speak.
"I know what you mean. I was depowered also. I mean, I could stretch. It was cool," Andrea said, leaning back against the cold steps. Melody smiled slightly at the girl.
"Flyin's cooler."
"No way!" Andrea retorted, eyes widening. A look of mock anger was on her face. Suddenly, the girls started laughing, forgetting about their problems for just a few seconds. It felt good to laugh. Afterwards, Melody would reflect on the laughing as a small bubble of happiness in the great ocean of depression she was in at the time.
"Hey," Melody said, looking at her new friend. "Ya wanna ride in the car with me ta the airport? Miss Mahn is drivin' me, and maybe we can get her to let me listen to mah Dixie Chicks CD."
Andrea grinned. "Dixie Chicks? Awesome."

Notes: Enough cuteness to choke a chinchilla. This is quite possibly my favorite piece I've written so far.
A giant ball of nervousness seemed to be forming in Jay Guthrie's stomach. Oh dear lord, why was he doing this? He was going to be laughed at, he was going to be fussed at, she was going to hate him for this! His wings twitched nervously as he walked down the hallway, looking at the numbers on the room. He wanted to be Cess at the moment, just to melt into a giant puddle of goo and slink slowly away to his room. He wanted to mope. He wanted to turn around completley and go back to his room and forget about this. But he wasn't. His feet weren't connecting with his mind. He walked up to a door and knocked on it. Oh man, oh man, oh man. Our father who art in heaven hallowed be thy-ohmigod, the door was opening!
"Yes?"
"Erm, hello. Ah wanted to know, erm, do ya wanna go out on a date with me? Maybe Sunday? We can just go to the movies or something like that, ah can take you out fer food if ya want, ah really don't know what ah want to do yet..." Jay stopped rambling and looked up at his lady love. He felt like an idiot. Right now, he was just hoping that she wouldn't hate him.
Under her niquab, Sooraya blushed, face turning the color of color of Jay's wings. "I...I think I would like to," she quietly said.
HALLELUJAH. She wanted to, she said yes, she accepted! Jay felt like all the angels up in heaven were singing his praises. The giant ball of nervousness was melting into one of happiness and relief. Oh he wasn't a doofus! This was SO worth it! Praise the lord that she said yes! Jay was resisting the urge to fist-pump the air. Instead, a huge smile spread over his face. "Cool. So...ya got any ideas?"
