Various things in my work recently have made me aware that while I'm on board in theory with the aim of having a more representative children's literature, in practice a lot of my knowledge (and thus my work) is centred around a canon which is still predominantly white and also surprisingly male (relative to the gender balance in cl as a whole ( Read more... )

Have you read anything by Sherman Alexie? His website is here. He's a Coeur d'Alene Indian who grew up on a reservation. The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian is about a 14-year old. (I haven't read this yet.) Flight: a novel has a 15 year old protagonist, which I liked a lot.
