• Watched The Help tonight with Mum and sobbed like a hormonal bitch. Well, yeah, duh. And I read the book months ago for bookclub and did the same thing -- felt a ton of feelings, mainly a huge swelling of rage directed at Miss Hilly Holbrook and dear God I want to punch that fucking manipulative racist bitch in the eye, and cried like a running ( Read more... )

Angie, have you ever read the graphic novel Captain Swing and the Electrical Pirates of Cindery Island by Warren Ellis? My coworker Ashley recced it to me, insisting it was right up my alley, and based on the title it sounds up your alley as well and so I wondered if you'd read it/what you thought. (And if you haven't read it, lemme know if you'd like a review once I'm done. :D)

I have NOT. I've never even heard of that! Think I need to check it out now, though!

Also, I'm trying to remember the name of the Rapunzel-meets-steampunked-old-west graphic novel I read a while back and I can't for the life of me remember the title or the authors. But there's a sequel, and I read that, too, and it was just ADORABLE. Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk is a Navajo Indian and ughhh they are just adorable together AH AH AH.

...So yeah, if you can find out what that series is called, I highly recommend checking that out. X^D

I cried so much with The Help. And while I completely understand all the critics it got because of the racist issues, I ended up loving it because of the wonderful group of women playing those characters. Bryce did such an amazing job as Hilly! I hated her so damn much! AND JESSICA, MY SWEET GIRL!!! I just loved her relationship with Minnie so much! AND VIOLA! AND OCTAVIA! Such great performances all over the place.

I just watched The Help tonight too! And I actually didn't find the "white savior" aspect to be as bad as I thought it would be. And they actually did bring in some good references to the larger civil rights movement going on. Frankly, what I personally found most offensive about the film as a whole is how boring it was to me! Seriously! Jessica Chastain was like a breath of life. By far my favorite part of the whole movie. Honestly, I feel like a better movie might even have been made just about Celia & Minnie's burgeoning friendship.
