BEST. DAY AT WORK. EVER.

My icon has never been more appropriate.

So back in March a new fissure opened up between Nāpau Crater and Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō (you may remember I made a post about it) and lava poured out for a few days, and an experimental seeding and out-planting section of the forest caught fire and burned to the ground. We've dubbed this area Kupukupu, and now that my ( Read more... )

I don't know, I mean, you didn't get to ride in a helicopter. Would that not have made things even better?

Well, yes, okay, that certainly would've improved the experience... but things would've had to have gotten pretty extreme for that to happen. Even if we stuck around until we heard the evacuation order on the radio, we would've had plenty of time to walk out.

I would say I am mildly disappoint, but... I had a close brush with Pele, and I didn't die. I'mma call that a win.

Every day is wonderful, but it's safe to say not every day is that exciting. I am going to be remembering this one for a long, long time.

(Love your icon. Love that scene!)

Hmmmm, let's see... I believe we passed the convoy of government trucks at around... 3:05? 3:10? They would've been on the road for idk, twenty minutes, half an hour at that point? The roadblock was up by the time we got there; I expect it went up around 2:45 at the latest, quite possibly earlier.

I would like to emphasize that nobody on Chain of Craters Road was in any danger at the time of evacuation; the lava doesn't move quite that fast. When it comes to keeping the public safe from volcanic activity, the Park Service is inclined to be extremely conservative, especially early on in an eruption when we don't have a lot of information yet about how it will behave. They're very into preventative evacuation... as they should be ( ... )
