O HAI INTERNETS.

Feb 18, 2012 10:57

Okay, so in case anyone hadn't already figured it out, my internet presence is going to be somewhat diminished for the next several months. I will only have the possibility of internet when I'm not in the field, which, as I go further into my internship, will not be a lot of the time; when I'm not in the field I will only really have internet when ( Read more... )

Man, yeah, I bet mistnetting on Hawaii is crazy. I normally don't have to worry about disinfecting nets or bird bags. :D; I mean, we wash the bags, sure, but... The only thing that doesn't kill is pox virus, so if we catch a pox bird we tie the bag in a knot after releasing the bird, and keep it separate from the rest of the bags and then throw it away later. And that happens, like, once a year.

Oh yeah, totally. I think we have a disinfectant that kills EVERYTHING so we do the same thing, quarantine a bag that touches a pox bird, and then we disinfect it later. But yeah, with our birds so sensitive to disease and especially working with so many endangereds we have to do a lot of stuff other people don't. We also go into the field with a whole bird hospital set-up, dunno if you ever had to do that... a box to put the bird in and heating pads and oxygen and artificial nectar etc.

Aaaaauuuugh I really need to find time to post my bird pictures from last week, we had all three of Hakalau's endangered honeycreepers, some of them several times over, plus all of the threatened and common native forest birds except for ‘elepaio. Sooooooo many ‘i‘iwi at Hakalau, ohmigod, I never get over how many ‘i‘iwi there are up there. /things that mostly only make sense to me, probably, fffff. TL,DR; BIRDIES YAY WE LIKE THEM. :DDDDDDD

Yeah, a hospital box is standard equipment, and I've used it a good few times on birds that get cold-stressed easily. We also always had a little packet of Maui raw sugar in case we got a stressed hummer. :)

I want to see your bird pictures! And that did not only make sense to you, it made sense to me too! But yes, most people outside of Hawaii probably are not familiar with the names of Hawaiian birds. Though I bet most people have at least seen pictures of 'i'iwi because they are so iconic when it comes to Hawaiian avifauna.

Haha yay for supporting the Maui economy! We use Necton for our honeycreepers; they get to have as much as they want after we steal their blood. That's my favorite part so far, hand-feeding them, watching them lap up their nectar with their wee little tongues OMG THEY ARE SO CUTE.

YAY OK GOOD, I couldn't be sure, I mean, you know a lot of things about a lot of birds but Hawaiian endemics is a bit of a specialized subject. Most people inside Hawaii aren't familiar with the names of Hawaiian birds, but let's just NOT THINK ABOUT THAT RIGHT NOW.

Aaaah, I'll miss you while you're out in the field, but it's such a good reason for going missing I guess I'm going to have to forgive you. (Pictures!) Also I suppose I'll have to amend my usual assertion that I have the best commute ever (during the summer) to "I have the best commute ever in Chicago." Your walk-through-a-rainforest commute totally trumps my bike-along-the-lake commute (but I'm keeping my commute in second place simply because it's mine). (-;
