Those are so beautiful, darling. A visual feast for the eye! <3 I particularly loved the ones of the forest after Pele burns it down -- something very inspiring about them. Makes me think of this book I read a while back (and I should really look into getting the rest of them, I rather enjoyed it), about these mages that control the elements, and this extremely rare one who can control all four, and would spend his spare time coaxing land back to life after a major fire. Beautiful.
And the plants!! I've often thought that I should have become a botanist, or a horticulturalist -- I love plants so damn much. <3 Thank you for putting each and every one up -- it's likely the only time I'll have the chance to see them. <3
Yeah, Kupukupu's coming back a lot better than my bosses initially feared... natives like ‘a‘ali‘i, ‘ilima, and ‘uki‘uki that like disturbance are popping up out of the ground all over the place, and some of the out-plants and wild trees and shrubs are resprouting... it's a concern when native forest burns, though, because a lot of the alien weeds are a lot more fire/disturbance tolerant than most of our natives, and/or grow faster. With every burn this forest will become a lot less pristine. ...Not much we can do, though, if Pele wants to burn it, she'll burn it. Anyway she may just pave over the whole area in a few years. ...Conservation in HAVO is kind of an... interesting endeavor. ^_^;;
Haha, with this job my phone is so full of random native plants, most of them pretty unremarkable-looking. I can't help sharing my ‘ōhi‘a lehua pictures, though. As I told cradle_song in my August picspam post, I appreciate so hard that our dominant forest tree is covered with beautiful flowers all the time, and I am endlessly fascinated by the

I LOVE THE FIELD TOILET. :DD It comes with such a nice view! ...It's perched over an earth crack, because there's no way to dig holes in that solid rock, and there's actually a bit of a rampart shielding it on two sides, so it's almost got privacy. It's about as good as you get up there. (I didn't show a picture of the old toilet next to it... it had crumbled apart and fallen into the crack. :DD)
DAMN RIGHT. And you know, flights will always be expensive, but at least once you get here you know you have a place to stay and most of your food to eat and transportation and the best tour guide on the island for FREE, so there's that, at least. ^_^
That looks like a pretty nice field toilet. Can't really judge its true quality without seeing the view from the seat, but it looks like it could have quite an excellent one.

Sometime we need to touch base on whether or not a visit to Hawaii this winter will be practical. It would be fun to have you show me around that island of yours. Bellingham to Honolulu nonstop is only $335 round-trip. My budget's still a bit tight at the moment, but it's definitely on my list of things I'd like to find the time and funds to do this winter.
Our shield volcanoes tend to tear under their own weight, breaking open in long seams called rift zones. The rift zones are weak points in the mountain, relatively easy places for lava to break through to the surface, so eruptions happen as frequently at one of the rift zones as at the summit. Mauna Loa and Kīlauea each have two rift zones, long chains of vents and pit craters; most of the activity in Kīlauea's current eruption has occurred along Kīlauea's East Rift Zone at Pu‘u ‘Ō‘ō and other smaller, more temporary vents nearby
