I've made a scarf in thick and thin yarn before but am failing to find photos. I did it quite narrow and the colour and texture changes showed beautifully.

The repeat is:

Works on multiples of four plus three.

Knit two, purl two across, ending with knit two, purl one.

Very simple and a lovely end product.

Sorry another way to express it is (K2,P2)repeat until last 3, K2, P1. The end result is rib columns alternating with garter columns.

I started the 3x3 on size 10 (UK 6) needles, what size have you done this in?

I had some lovely wool like that once and it worked very well with moss stitch: each row is just K1,P1, but instead of lining the Ks up with the Ks like ribbing, you offset it by one.

I thought of that too, but I absolutely loathe doing moss stitch. I love how it looks, hate the fussiness of creating it.

I did a dishcloth in seed stitch once, a dishcloth, and nearly went mad by the end. Hee.

Wow your cat is ultra well-behaved! I don't know any cats who would use yarn as a cushion rather than something to destroy.
