Yeay, tomatoes! We have some green ones set too; I can't wait for real fresh tomatoes.
Don't know what to tell you on the bug/critter issue; depends on whether it's insect or rabbit/squirrel. You'll always lose some to the bugs (since you don't really want to spray insecticide on your greens, I'm guessing -- I don't.) But if it's a bunny then just getting it up and onto a short plant stand or table would do it. Or maybe getting a pinwheel -- you know, the twirly toy on a stick? Critters tend to turn away from those when they spin in the breeze.
But the plants looks like they're doing really well otherwise!
We have Japanese beetles eating away at our basil but the damage looks nothing like the chunk missing from your leaf. If we catch the beetles in the act we try to knock them off into a cup of soapy water. That can be difficult, as they can fly off quickly. Not sure what would get on your deck to snack on the basil. A.D.
Depends how you have the future pesto set up and what kind of critter is eating it. The best thing if it's in a pot is to wrap the pot in something waterproof and set the pot in enough water to discourage things that crawl (make sure they can't just hop from somewhere else).
If it's a flying something eating your basil, cover it with thin cheesecloth.

Something munching your future pesto? That's just wrong.
