Goals for 2013

Dec 28, 2012 22:44

It may sound corny to some, but I try to set SMART goals
  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Relevant
  • Time Sensitive

writing is hard!, challenges!

Okay, I want to do this now too. hoktauri has mentioned it, as well. I think it'd be a good idea to set a goal for myself :)

Good luck, bb! I can't wait to read your fics :D

YOU'RE AN ENABLER XD

I'm worried because I tend to write short pieces, but I have all these long fic ideas, so...why not? It'll be fun to try and perhaps it'll motivate me!

You can make that another goal! To try and write a longer piece! even if you go for a series type thing - a compilation of shorter pieces to form a greater whole.

I'm always an enabler for more writing!

I did it this year and am signed up again, although for the much more modest minimum of 75K.... my own writing calendar was helpful, although I only 'counted' when I posted something... so weeks of blank days didn't mean absolutely no writing...

Whee! See you there!

Very cool! I was tempted to sign up when I saw goddess47 post about it, but I don't seem to handle that kind of writing set up well. I mean, if I don't keep track, I manage to be fairly productive, but as soon as I start monitoring it, I fall to pieces.

I'm sure years of therapy would explain that to my satisfaction. :-) That doesn't mean I'm not ready to cheer you guys on or reap the benefits of your efforts, though!

It's funny how brains work. I need to see actual, measurable progress. I love spreadsheets and tracking things. But I can see how for other people it's too much structure and almost limiting because you can get focused on the numbers and not the process. it's one of the reasons I dont' like books about writing too much because i find there isn't one 'right' way. There's just whatever works for each person.

GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF US!

I do like the idea of this:
I try to set SMART goals

Specific
Measurable
Attainable
Relevant
Time Sensitive

But I would have to say that every time I apply serious pressure to my writing goals, it truly shuts me down. Write a 20 K fanfic in 2 weeks because I want to? No problem. Set myself a goal of writing a set number of words a day? Worst case of writer's block EVAR!

I have a *lot* of books on writing I've never read because when I started reading them, I realized I was doing everything wrong. :-) Completely shut me down for a while.

But I'll be watching and cheering you guys on!

This happened to me! I read a few articles and was just... disheartened.

A lot of them were more 'thinky' than I aspire to be. I just want to write entertaining stories. I hope I get better as I continue to write but I'm not looking to change the world or write the great American (CANADIAN!!! I should say) novel. I just want to write stories I like and I hope other people like them too.

and with writing books, I think a lot about my cello practice. I don't get better by reading books about playing the cello (although they can sometimes be interesting). I get better at playing the cell by PLAYING THE CELLO. and I think writing is the same. You get better when you do it. and whatever it takes to make it a regular habit is what you need to do.
