Wow, I'm really enjoying this, the opening just leaps out and grabs you! I read part 1 before work and have been looking forward all day to reading the rest.

(Can I mention a typo that was a little distracting? The soldiers on horseback that ride in at the last minute to save the day are the cavalry, not the calvary.)

Thanks for letting me know about the typos - I'm actually not a very good speller and rely on spell check, but of course, if it's actually a word, it doesn't catch it. I didn't know I was spelling it wrong so thank you!

I like Archive of our own (AO3) just because it lets me post long stuff in one big post. So much easier!
