I believe that simple citric acid is quite effective, although I'm not sure that your experiment sounds that valid.

Keep it in sterile vials, preferably. If you're keeping it for a short time, refrigerate it around 4 degrees Celsius.

It will tend to settle out, unfortunately, but so long as you centrifuge the samples before use, it should be fine.
