What a waste of time.

[ a rather gruff voice complains before the picture has turned on and become focused, revealing the speaker's face. he looks slightly more irritated than usual, though there aren't many who would recognize that. ]

We're supposed to talk to each other using these things, huh? [ he turns away, seemingly annoyed at the very ( Read more... )

[He's not quite sure he likes the part about not caring if this place blew up with everyone else on it, but otherwise... he can't help but sympathize. Useless anger and complaining, yes, but it's not like Yuri isn't guilty of yelling at the gods over the network.]

You're right, asking wouldn't do much good. These gods aren't too good at listening.

[ if his own situation wasn't so desperate, he might have some attention to spare to this world's concerns. as far as he's concerned though he's racing against two clocks: the one ticking to his own world's destruction and the more personal one tolling down his own life. ]

I'm sure they're listening just fine. They just don't care what we have to say.

[Yuri can understand that. He caught that bit in the original post about the madman destroying this guy's world. If he had been dragged here while Duke was still threatening to wipe humans off the face of Terca Lumireis, Yuri would just be that much less happy about being here. He wasn't happy with it as it stood, and he didn't have any pressing reason to get back home. He gives a nod at the other man's words.]

True enough. [At least, he has no reason to assume the gods can't hear what any of them say. They either aren't paying attention or they just don't care.] Anyway, no one's gotten anywhere so far by trying to talk to the gods, or by looking for a way out. I'm not telling you to give up, but don't expect it to be easy.

That's fine. I'm not looking for encouragement, just information. [ he has no doubt that people have tried, he just questions how far they've been willing to go and what they've been willing to do. ] There's no sense in talking or bargaining with these Twelve... I won't waste my time. Actions speak louder than words.

[ though even he's not sure just how far he'd be willing to go or what things he would do to leave this place, he's already begun to consider rather dark options. ] Do you know what people have done so far? All I've heard of is searching for an exit that doesn't exist.

I'm not sure what people have done other than look around. And yell at the gods uselessly. [He's done both, not that he made any noticeable progress.] Plenty of people have tried just not cooperating, but the gods seem to have ways of getting what they want regardless. [Maybe there's a bit of a edge to that statement. It's kind of a sore spot for him.]

If you have any better ideas, I'd love to hear them. [Not that he hasn't contemplated doing something more drastic, he's just not sure what he could do that would have any real effect.]

I've figured that much out myself. [ he doesn't sound too happy about it, but he nods regardless. ] Wanting to resist makes sense, even if you know it ultimately won't work. [ he doesn't plan on ever really cooperating himself, even if it's a futile gesture. ] Even if they get their way eventually, there's no reason to make it any easier for them than necessary. [ ...at least he figures resistance makes it more difficult, though he can't say for certain. ]

They care about this world. [ that's the most obvious thing he's seen so far. ] If you want someone's attention, go after what they care about.

[He nods in return.] That's what I've been thinking. [At least since he discovered that being cooperative doesn't actually keep the gods from messing with you, and before that he hadn't been planning on doing any more than was necessary to keep his sanity. That thought-warping thing has to take some effort on the part of the gods, right?

At the second part, he nods again.]

The more people do what the gods want, the more this world grows. New things pop up overnight sometimes. So it seems like resisting does do something, if only because they don't get whatever power they get from it as often. [This makes sense to him, anyway. He looks thoughtful for a second.]

I wonder what it would take to actually get their attention. [He's not willing to put everyone here in danger over a maybe, but there has to be something they can do that would make the gods notice.]

I've heard of that. [ it still sounds a bit ridiculous to him, but everyone seems to be saying it's true so he has to grudgingly accept that it is. ] The more frequently you do what they want, the more powerful they become. We can at least limit their growth, if not completely stop it. [ ...though that does make him wonder why the Twelve's approach is so lenient, when it seems like they can force obedience when and if they choose to. oh well, if they've chosen a methodology that their captives can exploit, then exploit asch will. ]

That's the question, isn't it? [ even asch doesn't know how far he'd be willing to go yet, though he's already begun to consider extreme options. not knowing or associating with the people here might have made things easier, a fact he now realizes, but unfortunately it's too late to take that back. ] It all comes down to what you're willing to do. There must be things they won't simply ignore.

[Yuri had wondered about the gods' methods many times, but he certainly can't complain about the gods being as lenient as they are. He still thinks they're stupid for choosing to mess with people's heads at random instead of how he originally assumed it worked, but whatever. That just makes it easier to resist for longer.

As for what he'd be willing to do, that is the question, isn't it?]

I won't put people here in danger. [He doesn't know them all, and he doesn't necessarily like them all, but when it comes down to it, everyone that got dragged into this place is in the same unfortunate boat.] I don't care about the place itself, though. I just wonder how big a disturbance we'd have to cause for it to get noticed.

[ relying on the twelve's apparent "generosity" still bothered him though, if only because he knew they could change things if they ever so much as felt like it. as their captives, they really had no say in how things were. growing too comfortable with the status quo would be a mistake, yet it was also impossible for people not to start developing habits based on expectations. ]

I see. [ if that could be avoided, he would have preferred it too... but he's already given in to the belief that any attempt to strike at the gods put everyone at risk. when there were choices were simply compliance or disobedience, he would always choose the latter. ] If you wish to avoid causing unnecessary danger, you can start small and escalate things until they can no longer ignore you. [ ...that was the safe and slow approach though, and time was always a concern. ]

[Any real strike at the gods probably did put everyone at risk somehow, since there was no way of predicting how they might react. Since the gods had proven themselves to have a stunning lack of logic, he wouldn't put it past them to do something harmful to completely innocent people as a form of retaliation. The most he could do was make sure that the gods being crazy was the only way other people would get involved.]

Sounds like a good plan. [Though maybe he somehow caught that thought about time being a problem. Or maybe he just remembers what the original post sounded like.] But let me guess--that's not fast enough for you, right? [This isn't judgment in his voice; he understands needing to get home as soon as possible. But as of right now, he doesn't quite trust this guy not to do something too drastic.]

For what it's worth, time seems to work a little differently here than you might be used to. [Not that he'd quite figured it out, but it certainly isn't as straightforward as time passing the same way in other worlds as ( ... )

[ limiting risk and exposure only made sense, and even asch wasn't fond of letting innocent people suffer for his own transgressions. even if he'd started out resolved to do anything, the definition of "anything" has quickly narrowed. perhaps not as much as others might have liked though. he wouldn't let other captives be put at risk, but in his mind everything and everyone else was fair game. an us or them mentality. ]

No, it's not. [ he had no reason to hide it. ] I have a lot to think about, but I don't plan on taking nothing but small steps either. [ within reason, but still rushed... was that even possible? it came down to his own judgment, which most back home at least would know was prone to recklessness. ]

What do you mean...? [ he hadn't heard of that, but it was an interesting thought. ]

That's what I thought. [Yuri wasn't quite sure what to make of that, honestly, not being able to read the other man's mind. Even if he could, he generally found that "us versus them" taken to any extreme was sort of a dangerous mentality. He didn't hold anything against those few people he'd met who seemed to actually be native to this world... though even he would admit to not caring about them in the same way. What he didn't understand was why the gods felt the need to trap people from other worlds to do things for them when it looked like they had people here already.] Just remember you're not the only one trying to get home and I don't think we'll have a problem. [He certainly wouldn't mind making progress. As it stood, he thought this guy might be a nice ally to have in this crazy fight against the gods, as long as he didn't go overboard.

As for that question, it's a little difficult to answer.] I can't say I really understand it, myself. When I got here, someone else I knew was here already. The last thing she ( ... )

Of course. [ yet at the same time, he would prioritize his own need to return home first. it was an egocentric, selfish way of looking at things, but in his mind his need was simply greater. helping others was fine, but he wouldn't do so at a cost to himself. he was no good samaritan and he recognized that about himself. ] If a way can be found to return everyone, that would be preferable. But if that isn't possible... [ he just shrugs his shoulders slightly. others could blame or curse him; he wouldn't care. though the real question was... would he choose his own escape if he knew it would directly harm others? that was a bit more troubling. his people and his country needed him, but that couldn't be used to entirely justify hurting other captives here either. a troubling thought. ]

...I see. I've heard that... someone I know was here previously as well. [ now that he thought about it, if luke had been here at some point in time, asch certainly didn't know about it. luke's absence from their own world would have been noted; he would ( ... )
