"But why would one choose to live an unhappy lifestyle if they knew themselves to be a social animal with naturally community minded inclinations?" Data asked, scouring over his PADD

"Intelligent beings sometimes get into habits --which are behaviors carried on without conscious thought. I believe Scrooge was first accumulating wealth for the feeling of security it brought him, the physical security he would need to support a family and pursue other joys, but due to some quirk in his nervous make-up it became an addiction, an end in itself, and an intervention by others was needed to jolt him out of it."
"I am sorry I interrupted, but I do love literature, and human psychology."

Data perked at the woman's voice, tilting his head thoughtfully as he mulled over her explanation carefully. "I still do not understand how the security of money can be found more fulfilling than positive interaction with humanity."
Tiberius shot Lady Sally a quick attempt at a thankful smile, though he was being utterly daunted by this facsimile of his father. "Thank you, ma'am. I appreciate your assistance. It's a little along the lines of someone with an astigmatism leading the blind. I'm putting forth a valiant effort but I have to combat a couple of decades of obscenely rational input."

Sally smiled at Tiberius, and gave him a wink with the eye away from Data. Then she turned her attention to Data.
"Ah, but you see, it was not the search for fulfillment that drove his behavior, but fear. There is a demarcation in a person's behavior. In times of scarce resources people focus on physical survival needs. When those needs are met, then they turn to seeking intimate relationship. The amount of resources needed for a person to consider that they have 'enough' is not constant from person to person, it varies based on past experience and personality type, and in Scrooge's case, his sensor had been set widely away from the norm."

The wink earned her a facsimile of his human father's dashing smile. Unlike some people, Tiberius didn't quite stumble his way around the fairer sex (whichever sex that might be).
"Ah... I believe I understand. However, the intervention was required to make him realize a... limiter, then?" Data asked, cocking his head innocently and quizzically.
Business had proved, as expected, quite sparse in the little counseling office. Though the police had arranged that all station law violators requiring counseling in the course of their sentencing would be routed through him, such violations were rare, and those who would willingly speak to him were equally rare. He found himself with free time which he had chosen to expend in watching through the films in the station's library, and on occasion cautiously moving through the crowd to further hone his empathic senses without risking being overwhelmed.
The clean, metallic feeling of two AIs was comforting among the low roar of human thought, and he turned his steps toward the two robots-- one familiar to him, one not yet.
"Greetings, Data. And to your friend. Are you discussing human literature?"
"I am discussing the depiction of emotion in human literature in an attempt to understand it." He nodded toward Tiberius. "This is my son from another universe, and according to him I have an emotion chip installed in his timeline that makes me capable of something close to human emotion."
Tiberius sat up a little straighter, and despite all of his human mannerisms turned an interesting robotic headtilt.
"You're an AI as well? Holotronic, duotronic, multitronic, or positronic?"
"Your son?" Daneel steepled his fingers in a motion he had seen often humans make when puzzled but wishing to grasp the situation at hand. "Do you refer to him in the same context as your father, or do you imply a connection that is deeper than the act of creation?"
He looked at the young AI-- a responsive one, mind bright and highly functional. He he had none of the disarray of mind that Daneel associated with Arnold Rimmer, but there was still something quite organic in his movements. And the head tilt was a near mirror of Data's. In that way, though they did not share physical features, there could be said to be a family resemblance.
"My brain is positronic, implimented via electronic rather than optic impulses."
"Deeper than the act of creation, at least on my part," Tiberius assured Daneel, steepling his fingers together. "My 'father' raised me, and was a very good man. He gave me morality and the capacity to consider others. My other father gave me the will to survive with whatever means I had."
Data considered the young man, and almost said something about the loyalty being based off vague resemblance. He even opened his mouth to do so. But then, finally, a sprig of thought for Tiberius flittered through his net. A consideration for his well-being. His peace of mind.
So he just clamped his mouth shut, and offered a hint of a smile. That little bit that he found consoled humans when they needed it.
