Burt left the bordello feeling surprisingly good. He had worked through the first 3 steps of his OODA Loop. He had Observed his new surroundings, Oriented himself to the new situation, Decided what to do and was now at his favorite part. He was Acting! He was going to find that armory, get a job and discover all the ins and outs of this station. After that he could figure out a way to get back to Perfection! Then he saw the Big Guy explode through the floor like a graboid on steroids. "Easy there fellow, nobody means you any harm."
Wheatfields scowled down at the shorter man (but then, most people were shorter at any rate). "Means me harm, do you think. The station's powering up. Whole sections of it. There's enough power suddenly here to destroy a planet and I can't find out where it's coming from. Oh, let someone mean me harm and see if they can make my day even the slightest bit worse."
"Okay...that's bad." Burt found himself back at OODA Loop, step 1. The problem wasn't Mr. Big Guy but the station itself. Something Burt knew almost nothing about. Still maby he could help, and if he couldn't he could be dead if the station blew up. "Is there a way you can release that extra power into space like a shaped charge?"
A curt headshake. "Not knowing what's generating all of this new energy, wouldn't wish to try it. I don't know what the machinery that's woken up does, either; so I could short the whole thing and divert the charge out, but it might just merrily start building up problems again."
His brow furrowed. "Scotty. That's the man's name! Have to find out if he did something down in Engineering. I've looked for the power source for this place. I know a good many of them, from old solar sail intrasystem ships to antique fission ships to the top of the line fusion. Every time I think I find what's generating the place's power, it's just another reservoir, the real charge is coming from deeper in." A man could think he was aboard a death trap. And they'd said that Ragnarok was experimental and dangerous!
