I hope your day was happy and earthy. Mine certainly was. Steph and I walked around campus and hugged our favorite trees, then helped make bike-powered smoothies to give to people in front of Sayles. We will read more of A Wind in the Door tonight... it goes with the theme. Yay reminders of the interdependence of all life ( Read more... )

steph, writing, earth day, good things, dad, everything is connected

For some reason I really loved this poem. Just... all these little anecdotes rendered as concisely as haikus, or epigrams, each one containing so much. Just beautifully done, immense behind a veneer of simplicity. Though my favorite bit was --

He told me
about my name and David
Bowie when I asked him what
is androgynous.

-- because after "he told me about my name and David..." I completely expected "...and Goliath" or "...and Solomon" or, well, really anything Old Testament, but certainly not "Bowie." Which fits so perfectly with the whole theme of the poem, these "accidents" that fit together anyway; that are beautiful anyway.

Thank you! You got it exactly. I'm glad you liked it, and I'm very flattered, because I know you are serious about your literature.

I would also recommend Amanda's poetry again if you like this. It's sometimes more obscure, but in a playful way, and it's particularly pleasurable for its many layers of meaning.
