In my case, it is not through personal experience. When I first started thinking about this story, it was more about how I could explain the situation the Gunmen were in, and what would keep them from contacting their nearest and dearest. Amnesia was not my first idea but it evolved as I thought more about the story.

I think that amnesia -- induced or traumatic -- is not an uncommon trope in X Files or stories in general. Going back to S1, to Mulder's experience in "Deep Throat" became the inspiration for that aspect of the story.
