I like this, and it elaborates on some of the things that I was noodling about but hadn't yet verbalized. Particularly the fallacy that only pretty people compete; that's always been a sore spot with me. Again, I'm pressed for time, so will come back to it, but thank you for writing this.
I know that, in my circles, competitiveness usually revolves around either political and academic knowledge, or hipness, the latter being substantially more subtle. I tend to shy away from those situations, though, even when I'm capable of holding my own.
I do get a sort of pleasure in looking good, but I've never been conventionally attractive enough to draw any sort of power from it. I think I get what zingerella's talking about, though I think the dynamic is largely unconscious for most people.
You're welcome, and thanks for piping up. I was kind of surprised at how much oozed out from under my fingertips, and I still feel like it's scattered and all over the place, but I managed to articulate a lot of wha I wanted to say.
The "only pretty people compete" thing got right up my nose.
I really look forward to reading what you have to say, when you've had time to collect your thoughts.
