Yet Another Moving Story

Jan 09, 2012 10:59

To bring everyone up to date:

I found a nice little second-floor walkup apartment in the Beaches. Moving day is Jan. 15. I have hired these guys to do the actual heavy lifting part of the move: I am too old for schlepping box springs, MDF desks, and tub chairs up the stairs; my friends are wonderful people, but they do not deserve to be asked to ( Read more... )

That sounds like a good approach... I should try it when I'm ready to start packing.

BTW, I think you have some kind of HTML glitch in your post - there are a couple of paragraphs that are showing on my friends page that don't show when I click through to the entry. I think it's the part that was supposed to be behind the first lj-cut, but somehow ended up doing the reverse, and showing it only on the journal page and not on the entry page. Maybe a missing quote or bracket or something?

One of the hinges for the drop leave has come loose. I think this means re-drilling the hole that the antique screw came out of, because the hole is stripped. The wood is old, so I don't want to start drilling it myself.

The top of the table is two pieces of wood, joined by a tongue-in-groove join. Over time, the pieces have pulled apart, and warped, and they don't fit back together quite smoothly, so the joint needs to be shaved or something to make everything fit together, then the pieces need to be smooshed together again. If this were my own table, and if I had a workshop, I'd do it myself, but again, not my table, so a mistake would be upsetting. Heck, I'd do it myself if I had someone experienced to show me what to do and to make sure I don't futz it up.

A brilliant way of balancing efficiency with a really useful degree of box content awareness. I expect if I ever move that I'll do something similar.

I love your moving strategy! I would imagine friends would far rather help pack than help lug. Or at least I would!

I think most would. The other factor that made the packing party more appealing than a lot of moves was that it had a clear timeframe: I asked people to come around 11:00, and told them we'd be done around 3:00. A lot of moves are kind of open-ended-"helping someone move" could mean that you show up and there's a truck and a nice pile of stuff all boxed and ready to be loaded and unloaded. Or it could mean that you arrive and there's an ungainly pile of stuff, and the person needs help stuffing their belongings into boxes and untangling the snarl of cables and it never really ends. This way, there was ONE job-packing-and a set time frame. Given that everyone's busy, I think that's really important.
