I'm really glad that I'm not Stephen Harper. For many reasons, but now even more so because I really wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that letter.
I'm under no illusions that Mr. Harper will actually read my letter, let alone care what I think. He has minions to do the reading for him, and he doesn't care what people like me think.
Nonetheless, I am a Canadian, he's a public servant, and he deserves to know that as far as I'm concerned, he would not be receiving a raise after this performance evaluation.
I don't think it would be wrong. As a permanent resident, you're governed by the work of Parliament. You presumably govern yourself according to the laws made by Parliament. Your taxes support the work of Parliament. Whether or not you get the opportunity to vote for them, these people are representing you in the making of decisions that affect you.
Others may differ in their views of such things, of course, but I think that once a person is living someplace, paying taxes, owning property, and governing themselves by the laws of that place, they're entitled to a say, however small, in how that government happens.
Yay, you. Mad props for doing something, anything, instead of curling up in a ball of misery (which I may have done, but will prorogue the conversation before having to face up to it. It's the new fashion.).
Good for you. I wrote to my MP and the Governor General, but didn't even bother to write to the PM, since I thought his mind was made up. And then it occurred to me: no wonder he thinks the country supports him overwhelmingly. No one who disagrees is likely to bother talking to him.
I'll put a letter to the PM on my to do list for the weekend.
