Adam was onstage at the AMA’s, singing and trying to do the act they had rehearsed But he’d fallen and it probably looked really bad on camera, so he needed to do something, something more. All the boys in harnesses in the world couldn’t cover up that misstep.
So as he strutted up the stairs for the last part of the song, he saw Tommy pounding away on the synth. Tommy turned his head just in time. And so the first time Adam kissed Tommy, the entire world was watching.

It was New Year’s Eve, and they had just played an awesome LA show. Adam wasn’t at all bitter that he wasn’t asked to be part of one of the big televised events, because Tommy was thrilled to be playing a big gig in LA. Afterward, they were drinking and talking to other people, when Tommy came up to him.
“Hey,” he said, and Adam liked the way he looked sleepy and a little drunk. “I’m gonna talk to that guy over there, my friend knows him.” And like it was the most natural thing in the world, Tommy pecked him on the lips and went to the other side of the room. Adam held in his surprise.
“You dating him?” The person he was talking to just looked amused. Adam shook his head.
“No. He’s just affectionate, that’s all.”

The tour was glorious and exhausting and everything he’d ever wished when he was younger. He felt adored, but when he saw his schedule every day he wondered if he’d wished for too much. Tommy laughed when he told him that.
“Yeah, I get nervous before the shows. It’s so much more than playing those little gigs I’d been doing. I never did anything this huge before. Thank you.” Adam smiled-Tommy’s weird gratitude made him feel both flattered and a little uncomfortable. It wasn’t as if Tommy hadn’t earned the gig. Tommy reached over and hugged Adam with one arm. “It’s great though. We’re having fun, right?” Adam looked at Tommy, and he didn’t think about it before his mouth was on Tommy’s.
Tommy returned the kiss, opening his mouth to it, and Adam just pulled him in, glad they were alone in his room. He thought about how many times Tommy would come to his room, and he wondered if he had been trying to tell Adam something. Adam pulled back. “Tommy? Is this what you want?”
“Yeah,” Tommy said, and his voice was so quiet Adam could barely hear it. “Yeah,” he said louder. “I do, but I’ve never really been with a guy. But I like you and we’re on tour, and…I kind of want to take care of you. It’s weird.” He watched Tommy’s face flush, and he kissed it. They slept in his bed that night, and while it wasn’t perfect and Tommy was nervous about being with a guy, it was still amazing.

“Good show.” Tommy’s face showed no emotion. He was sitting on Adam’s bed.
“Yeah.” Adam was noncommittal back.
Tommy didn’t say anything for fifteen minutes, he just messed around on an acoustic guitar while Adam paced the room. Finally, Adam looked at him. “Stop that for a minute.” Tommy glared at him.
“You don’t get to boss me around. I’m not yours.” But he put the guitar down.
“I know you’re not, you made sure I’d know that when you picked up that girl last night!” Adam felt ridiculous, admitting his jealousy and anger. From the look on Tommy’s face, he thought it was pretty stupid too.
“Like you didn’t hook up the other night at the club. Yeah, I really betrayed you.” Tommy picked up the guitar again and Adam wanted to knock it out of his hands. Tommy looked up at him again, and he was almost as pissed at Adam. “Adam…I know we agreed to keep it casual. But it doesn’t feel like casual to me. And…with everything that’s happened…” Tommy’s voice broke and suddenly Adam felt like the biggest asshole. “I need you to be my friend. And if we can’t be friends and fuck, we’ll have to stop that part of it. Okay? ‘Cause I need you now. I’m sorry I hurt you, but…please?”
“Oh honey,” Adam said, and he dropped to his knees to hug Tommy as he put the guitar on the floor next to the bed. “I know, you’re right. You’re right, we’re trying to do too much. And I’m sorry. I know…now’s not the right time.” He pulled back and looked at Tommy, at the tears starting to form, and kissed him gently. It was just to let Tommy know he was here, that he cared about him.
They held each other for long minutes, and then Tommy took his guitar and went to his own room.

“Hey,” Adam said to Tommy. They hadn’t seen each other for a couple of weeks, but that was just post-tour burnout. “How are you?”
“Hey!” Tommy said, and even though they had parted on good terms Adam was glad for the big smile Tommy gave him, and the hug. “Come on in, we’re just gonna watch some movies.”
“I can’t stay long, I’m supposed to go to a party. I don’t really want to.” Adam came in anyway, and waved to Isaac and Sophie. They waved back, Isaac grinning at him. “I just-can I talk to you for a minute?” Tommy looked confused, but they went to the kitchen and Tommy offered Adam a beer. He shook his head.
“I know what we had wasn’t that serious, but I wanted to tell you…” Adam had to pause a minute. “I’m involved, seriously. Sauli, the boy I met in Finland? He’s coming to see me for my birthday. I just wanted to let you know. And…I we’re still on for the Drag Race premier, right?”
Tommy stood there for a minute, stunned, then he laughed. “Oh my god, I am so happy for you,” he said, “Of course-did you think I’d mind? I want you to have someone. I wanted you to have someone who could really be with you. He’s coming from Finland? He really likes you then. And fuck yeah I’ll be there-it’s not like I’d let Sutan down. Or you.” Tommy stepped forward and he fit in Adam’s arms as easily as he always had. “I’m really okay,” he said. “So go be happy.”
The kiss Adam got was familiar and friendly, and when Adam let go, he felt a weight he didn’t know was there lift off his chest.

Adam didn’t remember much about the ceremony, but from Sauli’ expression afterward he knew he must have stumbled through it fine. Their wedding day was balmy and perfect, the house they had rented overlooking the beach. Too bad that paps in helicopters were spoiling the view, but Adam had always wanted to get married near the beach.
The party afterward was amazing. They had a traditional Finnish style wedding supper, and afterward, Adam felt like he talked to everyone he had ever met. Then Tommy came up to him, his girlfriend talking to Sauli not too far from them. “Congrats, man. I’m so happy for you. You finally did it.”
“Yeah,” Adam said back. “I’ve always wanted to get married, and I did. I can’t believe it.”
“You deserve it,” Tommy said. “You always did, and I’m glad that it’s Sauli. He’s been so good to you. So when are you gonna knock him up?” Adam laughed.
“It’s a little early to look at adoption, but yeah. I’d love to someday. I just want to thank you. You’ve been one of my best friends for years.” Tommy shook his head, and his smiled was fond.
“It’s mutual and you know it. You don’t have to thank me.” Tommy hugged him and for a crazy second he wanted to kiss Tommy, just a peck to show how much he loved him as a friend But it would suck to kiss an ex at his own wedding, so instead he hugged back and felt grateful for their friendship.
