I could technically stay at my current apartment and become the pseudo-landlord. But I'm reaching the point where I'd really just want a place of my own. Housemates are good for short-term living arrangements, but my introvert meter (think Sims, with that little meter thing floating on top of my head) has been drained almost to empty over the last few years.

I am in the exact same boat! Our lease is up the end of July and I cannot wait to find a place of my own. I don't care at this point if it's a dumpy little studio in Brooklyn or whatever, I just want my own little place. And then if we ever get lonely we'll just visit each other ;)

I hope you find some place that's not dumpy! But yeah, I'm definitely willing to downgrade at this point in exchange for personal space.

If you're going to so_severus' birthday celebration thingy, then I'll see you soon!

Aw, your apartment is so awesome. Though three people in two bedrooms does seem fairly tight. Good luck!

Let me know what you hear. I want to give something to help out, but I REALLY REALLY do not want that money ending up in the hands of their government rather than going to people who need it. It angers me so much that we are going to be seeing so much death and destruction due to the fact that they aren't letting people in fast enough and in large enough numbers to avoid the devastating after-effects.

I agree. The Burma thing is so hard because if we don't figure out how to topple the government with the aid, we'll just have the same problem again within 10 years.

Giving directly to the Monks is the first good choice I've heard for sending aid.

I came across this post from cluegirl. She has the MoveOn.org email posted in the entry. Not sure if the links at the end are hers or MoveOn's, but either way, they link to additional information about Avaaz and the latest updates on the cyclone damage.

I came across this post that cluegirl posted just yesterday -- seems like she got the same email as the one I received via the MoveOn.org listserv. It definitely shows from her massive linkage at the end that she's done her research; my own poking around seems to confirm that Avaaz is a legitimate organization as well.

Congrats to A and D :) And good luck on your search for a new 6k!

I will pass on your congratulations :D

It's still too early to look, but I'm going to have to start thinking about what's next pretty soon. Roommate A mentioned maybe she, fiance J, and I could stay in 6K together (they'll take the large room and I'll move into the small room), so if anything, that's an option. But they might want to buy their own place too -- definitely not 6K though, seeing how the latest sold announcement for another unit in our building went for $750,000.

Just random curiosity on my part: how much does an independent living-space-unit cost in your part of the world? I understand it depends on the area of town, and so on, but I'd just like an idea of it.

And I totally understand your introvert concerns. I don't think I'd ever be able to share my living space with someone I wasn't married to, and even then, it'd be a problem, sometimes.

You didn't ask me, but I'm going to chime in anyway with my personal experience. This is pretty Manhattan-centric, though the most desirable neighborhoods of Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, etc) aren't much cheaper ( ... )

I see - thank you for explaining! At the risk of imposing on you too much: I find myself wondering what the average (or a common/usual) level of wages would be in NY? The prices you pay for rent sound about the same that people pay in my part of the world, but I have a suspicion that the wages are higher here.

It depends a lot on industry and experience. Finance tends to pay the best, though a lot of the higher salaries end up being in bonus money. I'd say 40-50K entry level finance stuff unless you're doing ibanking or luck into something that's more than basic back office/customer service rep. ibanking slaves make, like 100-200K a year, I think. But they work 100+ hours a week doing mostly grunt work. I have a friend who through a combination of experience and really good connections (and being a pretty smart kid) managed to get an actual arbitrage analyst job right out of school. No idea how much he makes, but I'm sure it's a ton ( ... )

Cool for the roommates, and good luck with the hunt!

(I'm not a coo'er either. I'd probably be more like, "Awesome, dude!" in that surfer-y voice)

That sounds like a smart bet about the Monks.

It is interesting -- NY has higher rents than SF, but the housing prices seem to be lower. {a place that sells for 750k would not rent for more than 3k a month here, I'm guessing)

*hugs*!
