I think the reason I am so fond of Sirius, James, and Lily ties into my being a mountaineer...

This is so interesting. I don't think I could take on a hobby so dangerous -- but my affiliation with the Marauders is wrapped up in my pre-motherhood career. I was an Intelligence Officer in the Navy and worked with many other Naval Officers. Many, especially the fighter pilots on the aircraft carrier (Top Gun wasn't too far off the mark, I am loathe to admit), were the kind of self-assured hotties that can grate on your nerves in certain circumstances -- but that kind of confidence in necessary when you are doing the equivalent of landing a semi truck on a postage stamp at top speeds (carrier landings are one of the most difficult things any pilot ever has to do). Safety on the flight deck is no laughing matter -- and everyone knows it, though in other places they have plenty of fun (and make fun of plenty of people). These are guys I'd trust with my lives, if not to date my best girlfriend (Although a lucky few fall into both catergories ( ... )

I am SO eager to respond to this when I'm not at work. Please stay tuned. I loved your semi truck on postage stamp analogy. You write the Marauders beautifully and I had a sense that motherhood played into that, but this is an interesting missing piece of background.

I said I was so eager to repond and look how long it took me- HA! Please take it as a compliment because I do the same with thought provoking e-mails that deserve the best response I can give them. No work today, so here goes ( ... )

Wow, Zia - this was an amazing read. Not only because it was well written, but probably also because I could NEVER be a climber. I do not like heights. I do not like cold. I do not like thin air. Kudos to you. I was looking over my own user info and realize I had not checked out your LJ or friended you. Consider yourself friended!

The main activities in my life involve mountains-- I enjoy rock climbing, backcountry skiing, and running in them. As Joseph Campbell puts it: "People say that what we're all seeking is a meaning for life. I don't think that's what we're really seeking. I think that what we're seeking is an experience of being alive, so that our experiences on the purely physical plane will have resonances within our innermost being and reality, so that we actually feel the rapture of being alive." That how the mountains make me feel...

That's how the beach makes me feel. There's simply nothing elselike it for me. I can so relate to what you are saying here, and I love that quote. I don't feel 'alive' if I've ( ... )

Of course I meant to italicize your quote. Darn these replies that have no edit function!

Hello Moonette!
Yes, I think if exercise involved Gold's Gym and a treadmill, my soul and spirit would get stamped out in the process. That is my favorite quote so I'm pleased you liked it too. I was glad to get your post and read about the beach; it is my experience that one is either an "ocean person" or a "mountain person" but they have close parallels and you said enough for me to understand where you are coming from. I think that "essence of being alive" comes through in your Oliver fic too, when he's flying. I think I'll venture into mommyhood soon enough (I'm there already in a way, being my 14 yr old sis's guardian, but she doesn't take as much time as a newborn) so I'm definately funhogging as much as I can now! Had to laugh- I'm crossing my fingers for my first unedited post on the thread soon, argh. : ) Thanks for stopping by! -Zia
