Musings on Dollhouse

I've twittered a little about this but, a longer entry is due.

Dollhouse is Joss Whedon's newest series (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible, etc.). I am a huge Joss fan. I don't have the the t-shirt but I still adore most of the work he has done. This is not to say he is without flaw, but so far there hasn't been anything he's done that I ( Read more... )

Mmm...Joss....

I've heard that Fox signed Joss on for a certain number of episodes of Dollhouse, and I think Joss remembers just how great it is working with Fox (ahem), so I suspect that he'll tie a number of plotlines together within that timeframe, just in case they pull the plug again. I'm hoping the show will continue, because it has a great deal of promise, but just in case, it'd be nice to see a fully-arched plot rather than a "Hey, I was watching that!" moment.

So far (haven't seen the second episode yet) it hasn't grabbed me the way Firefly did, but then FF caught me harder then Buffy ever did (with the possible exception of "Once More with Feeling"), so it's not a fair comparison. I'm enjoying it so far, and am interested in seeing where it'll go. And, of course, it's Joss, so I expect the writing to be (damn) good if nothing else.

(Aside--Did you see the Eliza Dushku/Summer Glau "watch Fox Friday nights" promotional get-together during the first episode? There is *such* a marked difference between those two actresses

I've been entertained, but not thrilled, by the first two episodes. To be honest, I thought the first seasons of Buffy and Angel were both garbage compared to what came later, though -- so maybe this will get better with time as well.

Interesting thoughts.

Perhaps the step back to the teenage midset will help with the ratings? Bringing in current teenagers who missed Buffy the first time around.

She does a good job, but Joss is writing to her strengths: Sassy, sexy, powerful with a hint of soft underbelly. However, I'm still having issues with whether or not she has the range to truly showcase a wider variety of Dolls...
My main issue with Dollhouse is it feels like Joss isn't stretching. So far I have 2 recycles actresses in very similar roles to their previous Joss roles.

While I agree with you WRT Amy Acker, I have to disagree with you about Eliza. Her Dolls in the first two weeks were IMHO totally unlike Faith. Faith was much harder, and had a much stronger sense of her own dangerousness than the Dolls have had.

And I've been really impressed with her Doll "tabla rasa" persona. I'm guessing they're shooting those scenes on different days than the "implant" scenes. If not, she's doing an impressive job going from "real person", to "vapid drone".
