A victory for hate in California

Nov 05, 2008 11:35

So, I haven't talked about this much here because it wouldn't do much good -- most of you are not in California and so not directly part of the issue. But my friends here have been hearing it from me for weeks ( Read more... )

Most eloquently put. I agree with you 100%, as does my mom, who was also alive in that era.

P.S. You're back in Cali! We should have dinner or something. :3

I find something really touching about the older people who voted no. Even though I have very little tolerance for it, I do understand the difficulty of growing up with a socially instituted prejudice, and I think very highly of people who are able to rise above their upbringing.

And yes, we totally should. I have a cold right now and so am not good company, but hoping it'll be gone soon. :) You have my email, right?

Yeah, this is shameful. Unfortunately, I think we have to undo the wrongs of the last 8 years and get back to where we were before we progress, which is too bad.

I agree with you and this is beautifully written...I went to a wedding this past weekend..the boys had it thinking if Prop 8 went through, at least they had gotten married when it was legal and the wedding was beautiful and I am sure they are both heartbroken today.

I became so damn tired of seeing those YES ON 8 signs with little families on them! :(((

Thanks very much.

The signs bug the hell out of me. My family's dipshit neighbor who just went through a really vicious two-year divorce where he tried to get custody of his kids taken away from his wife has one of those goddamn signs. He should have started with his own marriage!

Yeah. The worst bit of it, I think, is that California cared more about the welfare of chickens than equality for PEOPLE.

Ugh.

I think 2 was able to sneak through largely because all of the attention was on 8. The wording of it was also really impressively aggressive ("some animals should be able to stretch their wings", etc). Makes you wonder if 8 had read more like "two people are in love and you'd like to tell them not to get married and share the same rights heterosexuals take for granted" if it would have won.

Thank you for putting it so well. I have always loved how eloquently you verse yourself.

I am heartbroken today, though I know I am not alone in my feelings. I feel cheated and have so much anger toward the church for promiting hatred.

It doesn't do any good for me to apologize on behalf of the idiots, but I am more sorry than I can effectively articulate. Remember that the state does a lot of illegal things, and a certificate doesn't make you married. Being genuinely committed and recognizing it in the witness of people you care about makes you married. The rest is just paperwork, and it will get fixed.
