So, I am sitting here in my silk kimono robe (don't get too excited, I'm also wearing a t-shirt and jeans) and my slippers and I'm feeling very writerly. It's a nice feeling considering that over the past few days I've been going through one of those crises of conscience about what constitutes "important" writing (thanks, Time book). But now I ( Read more... )

First off, love the silk kimono robe thing. :)

Second (and perhaps more importantly) LOVED your story! And so glad that it's getting some of the recognition it deserves!

Lovely writing and such a well-told story. Brava!

Hah. I tried to find a photo of the robe (it's last season Victoria's Secret so I thought it might still be online), but no dice. ;) It occurs to me to give myself Pavlovian conditioning with a "writing robe"...

Thanks so much! Glad that you got a chance to read it and enjoyed it.

I discovered Edge back in like 2000 when I spent a few years living in england and became an immediate fan of both Kieron Gillen and Ste Curran, I loved the idea of games writing that was targeted at adults who'd maybe read a few books and stayed awake in school. It's easier to get at intelligent games writing now that the internet has opened up the field but at the time it was like a revelation to me.

So yeah, that's cool that he digs your stuff. :)

It's interesting to me that the UK game scene has portioned itself off into such a cohesive community, given the generally international nature of the online game discussion. I think it makes sense, just because they have such a close geographical proximity that they can get that enriching f2f action so much more often -- but after just reading some of the comments on that recent "top 10 UK game journalists" evaluation I realized again how much in their own world they are.

I agree, though, Kieron is good people, in or out of the UK. :)

I kind of assumed it was the sinclair ZX spectrum, and not geographical proximity, that was the biggest uniting factor of the UK gamer community.

Pfft. What's the point of wearing silk if it isn't against your skin. You're missing out on more than half the value. ;p

au contraire! It was against my skin on my arms, and I actually like that better than just wearing the kimono by itself. Skin exudes moisture and whatnot that make silk discolor and just feel different -- less smooth. You can wash it, but it's never quite the same as new silk. When worn with a thin shirt (and the sleeves were very short) I get the tactile sensation of the silk on my arms, which is where I tend to feel and appreciate it most anyway, without impinging on its newness. I am actually incongruously pleased about this discovery.

LIES! When the silk discolors and gets less smooth, you simply buy MORE SILK!

Not all of us are living the glamorous Los Angeles existence. Some of us have to roll around in upstate New York. ;)

Btw, will be visiting Long Beach (with jsridler, looking at apartments) first week of July.

I've been trying to come up with a good joke about how anyone can feel writerly if they're unkempt in bedclothes, but it just ain't coming to me! :)

I remember that story, but had to reread it to recollect the details. Well done.

There is something 'writerly', if there is such a thing, about hot caffeinated beverages and pyjamas.

And thanks!
