That's an excellent article! I really enjoyed reading it. I started collecting Hello Kitty in much the same way, scented stationary products as a small child. I think nostalgia is a part of the draw, but mostly it's the insane alchemical formula of cuteness that Sanrio discovered. Big head + pink + cats = win. And as a feminist, I don't think that my love of all things Hello Kitty is at all conflicting with my socio-political beliefs. In fact, quite the opposite. Just because something is seen as stereotypically feminine does not make it of lesser value. Cuteness has its own worth :)

Oh, and of all the Hello Kitty things that I've collected over the years, the weirdest has to be a package of Hello Kitty sanitary napkins that my sister sent me from Japan. O_o

Glad you liked! I agree re the feminism. I don't know if it's a reclamation thing or what, but there is a definite girl power thing going on with Hello Kitty.

And holy cow, those sanitary napkins sound terrifying.
