I know people don't always agree with my views. I start this entry with that disclaimer now. I'll also admit up front that I am not that well versed in this issue.

I stumbled upon this article tonight, while reading the cnn news feed. The article talks about students in Utah who are exercising their right to carry concealed firearms on campus. ( Read more... )

Disregarding any feelings I have on guns or gun control (hate guns, for gun control), I see two potential problems:

1) If there's a shooter, and someone else pulls a gun, all of the sudden you have a shoot-out, which increases the likelihood of someone innocent getting shot. More chaos means more of a chance of something going wrong, especially to a bystander. There's also the possibility of a well-meaning student being confused for a shooter and getting shot.

2) If people bring handguns, kids intent on doing damage will bring more powerful ordinance - bombs, automatic weapons, body armor, and so forth. Guns don't solve the problem, they exacerbate it.

I think I agree with the other two commenters. If you allow people to carry concealed weapons, you're more likely to have a lot more people injured or killed. But my view is that you would get many more impulse-control shootings. Many more bullying attempts can/will be made easier with guns. Having a bad day? Whip out your firearm and demand respect. At least by not allowing students to bear a concealed weapon you are removing many more possible problems.
