This is such a difficult, tricky issue. I would not wish to be in a place where I'd have to make such a call.

On the one hand, if Muslim women want to be covered head to toe, who cares? I find it abhorrent, but they should be free to do it if they choose. (The fact that women are often FORCED to do so is another part of the problem.) But on the other hand, it could easily be used as disguise while committing terrorist acts. For the protection of the rest of society, this cannot be allowed.

I do not know how French law runs in regards to religious freedom. But perhaps a first step would be to somehow designate Islam not as a religion, but as a political ideology?

It's a messy predicament, and one that we will likely be facing here in the U.S. at some point as well.

Hmm replacing one "oppression" with another "oppression". Good job, France!

Because not everyone wears it because they're forced to. To the people who actually don't feel oppressed when they wear it, they will be oppressed when they are forced to take it off.

Well, it's a religious symbol right? Perhaps people don't want to see it because it's imposing their religion onto others?

I've had a Jewish man yell at me for "proudly displaying my crucifix" at the college before. I wear it under my shirt now. People should keep religion in the home...

Thats just my personal experience.
