[It is evening when the boy makes his way back home, having spent the rest of the previous night and morning after at the Kurosawa House. Or... it was evening. What had happened outside? The sky was still dark, and his home ( Read more... )

[Mio lets out a bit of a sigh as she continues along the path, even now hoping to catch a glimpse of the sister that she'd lost sight of. It felt like forever since she'd last seen her...

The sight of Itsuki, outside of his cell his prison the storehouse is enough to break her from her thoughts. She stops moving forward, unable to help her unease at seeing that the ghost had switched locations so suddenly, even in a place like this (it was the same village, and yet...it wasn't, because that place had never connected to another manor). He'd never been hostile before, but...then again...]

Um...

[The flashlight catches Itsuki's eye, and he turns on the spot to face its oddly bright shine. The device is peculiar, but not as much as the girl who is now holding it.]

...Yae?

[She, too, only serves to perplex him more. What are those clothes she's wearing? She's dressed like a foreigner.]

[Itsuki's stark white hair had surprised some villagers as he made his way back home, escorted by his parents and a veiled priest that were no longer with him. It surprised those that didn't pretend to look the other way - the children, mostly. It wouldn't surprise Mio, though, would it. She has always known him like this.]

[The white hair doesn't surprise her, because she's always known him as he is, because she already knows what had happened to him. The failed ritual, his attempts at helping Yae and Sae, and then...

She shivers a little at the memory before slowly shaking her head in response to his question. Yae...it's always Yae. In this place, only Mayu could regard her as who she was, as Mio Amakura, and even then, her recognition seemed to flicker at times as she gave way to Sae. But that wasn't Mayu. That was a ghost, borrowing her sister's face and voice.]

I...no, I'm not...

[Her averts her eyes, wondering if denying wasn't a futile effort. She knew that she wasn't the deceased would-be Twin Shrine Maiden. She knew that she was different, because she hadn't left Mayu behind as Yae had Sae, however unintentionally it might have been, and yet...who else was there that could attest to that?]

[Mistaken identity? Itsuki blinks, apparently taken aback, then averts his gaze for a moment to stare at the wall. He's embarrassed for his mistake and trying to conceal it.]

Ah... my apologies. You look similar to... one of my friends. [The resemblance is striking... Were they relatives, by chance? But all of Yae and Sae's relatives lived in the village, as far as Itsuki knew. The clothes should have been another indication; Kurosawa-san would never allow his daughters to wear foreign clothes like that.]

[He turns back to the girl, taking one light step forward.] May I ask what brings you here, then? Who are you?

[Only on few occasions were outsiders brought into the village, much less his own home. Itsuki's gaze lingers on the broken-down status of the house; he wants to know what happened, but refrains from asking too many questions at once.]

[A tiny girl runs by one part of the sacrificial pair, the sound of a tiny bell tinkling as she runs through the halls of the house. The small girl let out a giggle as she looks about through this new place. She was still upset about the fact that she was still not at the proper Hell Gate, but what could she do?]

[Itsuki turns his head as a little girl passes by him. Chitose? He is silent, and doesn't call out as he stares. No... wrong kimono. She wasn't his sister.]

[Who was she, though? He didn't recognize her, and if she was inside his home, he should have. Did she have any idea what happened?]

[Those questions would remain unanswered as the girl disappears through a doorway, the strangely opened door slamming shut behind her as she giggles]

[A slight frown forms on the boy's lips as the door slams shut. He didn't like loud noises in his home; not because they bothered him, but because he knew they would bother his younger sister, Chitose. How long was this child running through the halls, and was she causing a disturbance? After what he just went through, to return to this rather than...]

[Itsuki follows after the girl, first stopping briefly in front of the closet beside the door she went through. When he hears nothing shuffling inside, he continues onward, careful and considerate enough to soundlessly slide the door closed behind him.]

[wandering around during the night doesn't bother one detective. While it's not something that he could say that he'd grown used to, it was something that no longer bothered him. After all, he'd been through more trying situations and made it out alive...

Except that one time]

...?

[it didn't explain how he ended up in this old village so suddenly]

You...?

[or what this boy was doing here by himself. It's been a while since he'd seen another person... Would this boy even see him?]

[Itsuki makes his way further into his house, alone, but slows to a halt when he thinks he hears something. In the hallway, he glances over his shoulder, frowning slightly in the darkness. Was...someone there?]

[Everything felt so off. Each room he passed was in disarray, nothing was properly lit...]

[And Itsuki felt so alone.]

[oddly, he neither feels disappointed or surprised. Just a quiet sort of acceptance... This really was the end for him. The Flashlight stays off, lest he startle the boy, but...]

[he stays in the shadows for the time being, walking with Itsuki to see where he was going. Though he has no physical body anymore, you can still hear the strange sound of uneven footfalls]

[Itsuki stays there for a moment longer before continuing on his way, walking barefoot through the remains of the Tachibana House. He's been walking barefoot ever since he left Kurosawa; his mother had frowned when she saw, but she said nothing about it. No one said anything when they came back to retrieve him, and so the boy said nothing in return.]

[He pauses several times more during his walk - each time in front of what appeared to be a closet. He stands in front of each, staring and...listening? When nothing happens, he leaves it, his expression turning a little more somber each time. The uneven footfalls cause Itsuki to turn his head every now and then. No one was here... maybe he was just hearing things.]

...

[Itsuki makes a final stop in front of the Twins Room, expression blank as he stares at the closed door. He makes no move to open it.]
