wishing for a partner for a fictional character, even in the form of a public art-contest is no violation of copyright, as long/since it's just non-profit fanon, and doesen't really violate the canon of the original.

That was my interpretation too, but I think I read somewhere that von Johnson wanted to sell the pictures? Display them somewhere in a context that was not entirely non-profit? Or something? And they still ruled in her favor.
